It appeared to have a red tail at first, then turn bright white as a streak, then a white ball for about a full second, then go fade into black with the tail disappearing.
I only saw fireworks go that fast on start up, not in falling, if this was fireworks, it was shot from a balloon and shot in a downward direction
no noise, no aftershock, just a brilliant white light larger than any star or planet
the arc in the horizontal direction was about 5 degrees wide, and 20 to 25 degrees in azimuth
I live in the SF Bay area - I happened to walk out on the porch about midnight a week ago, and saw the biggest meteor I've ever seen also, by far.
The white shooting star became a broad flare of red and green as it descended just over the treeline, apparently very low in the atmosphere.
Like you, I considered it might be fireworks, but I saw another ~5 streaks (higher up) moving in the same direction over the next few minutes.
Are you logged in?
Aye guv, it landed out on Horsell Common, it did.
Weather balloon.
bump...for later read
Hark. It is the cOming of the messiah.
Sounds like a meteor to me.
Hiya RaceBannon,
I saw it also,
I am in Florida atm,
I was on a cell phone and can tell you I saw it at 10:28:58.
Wasn’t that bright for me , but I’m in an urban area with much of light pollution.
I’m down in NC, and I saw it. I happened to be out walking my dogs for the last time. Funny thing is, my dh called me from Afghanistan a few hours before, and he saw it too. Corny sounding, I know, but quite the coincidence IMO LOL.

My wife and I saw it in Rhode Island. It was really magnificent!! We were just looking at the constellation of Orion and commenting about the stars in the bow when the shooting star came right through the constellation. It was multi-colored and huge. I think the fire ball that we saw was about half the diameter of the moon in appearance.
I'm in suburban Boston.
About five years or so ago, my daughter and I were leaving our house to walk to a local store. We lived near the center of Phoenix, Arizona at the time and saw about the same kind of thing as your huge shooting star. I was sure it would be reported on the news. To see something like that and it being visible in the city. Not a word. It was as if my daughter and I were the only two to see it.
I wish.
