A cliffhanger (blaaa..I watch Dynasty for cliffhangers) and Jack going mooselimb. Will need to find something else to do on Monday nights in the future as I have just placed 24 on irrevocable waivers.

We didn't start watching 24 until about the third season, after hearing Rush rave about it so much (we don't even have cable -- TV has a VERY minor role in our lives). We LOVED 24 -- loved it so much that we went out and rented all the previous seasons, watched them and enjoyed them tremendously. And it kept getting better -- last season (2008) was even better than the one before. We just marveled at how well done it was.

Then came this year's show.

I thought this season was just garbage.

Man, you ain't kiddin', Brother FReeper! I kept waiting ... and waiting ... and waiting ... for it to redeem itself. But the plot, the more it went on, kept feeling like something that was out of control, as if its writers had written themselves into corners each week, and overall seemed desperate rather than designed. For the first time, it felt amateurish on that count. It was like the writers were in over their heads; in previous seasons, the plots were wild and insane, but always by design. You always knew that as a viewer, you were in the hands of professionals. This season it felt like you were in the hands of novices.

I kept waiting for a character I could care about, fall in love with, empathize and sympathize with, grieve for, hate, despise ... Jon Voight and the gal who played the Pres's daughter were the only ones that got an emotional grip on me, and surprisingly, Kim, Jack's daughter, became likeable (she was mostly a silly stupid-female stereotype in the others). And speaking of stupid females, the plot first started to get really beyond stupid when the president appointed her estranged daughter (!!!) as Chief of Staff. I mean, come on! How unprofessional and stupid would that be? So it made me immediately lose any kind of respect for the President's character because only a singularly stupid woman would do such a thing, and as such, one coudln't watch the rest of the show and take her at all seriously as a president.

And even though in the end she did the "right" thing by opting not to cover up her daughter's hit-man scandal, it hardly spoke well of her because the truth was, if she hadn't been so stupid as to appoint her daughter in the first place, then it woudln't have happened. So it was pretty near impossible to admire the president even for making the morally right call. It was sort of like having somebody throw a baby off a pier and then be hailed as a hero for jumping into the waves and cold water to rescue it.

The political correctness in this season was simply stifling. The only bad guys were hawkish American businessmen. Muslims were only portrayed as victims of wicked Americans. When the death bed "confessor" turned out the be the Islamic cleric, it was so saccharine and corny, so deliberate a slap at Christianity as to be shameful. It struck me that the mercy and compassion extended by the Muslim cleric was misrepresentative of reality, but the screenwriters seem to think the only dif between Jesus and Mohammed is the letters in their names. That really did it, pushed it over the edge. I may or may not give 24 a chance next year, but if it starts out as badly as this year's season, I'll just quit while I'm ahead.

I love many despicably liberal actors -- Ed Harris comes to mind. Had 24 cast Ed Harris, I could sure as hell understand why and I'm certain that I'd have enjoyed whatever role he played. They cast Janneane Garafolo, and she brought zero, zilch, null, nada, to the mix. I cannot understand why they cast her -- unless it was to thumb its nose at the show's conservative fan base built on praise of the show by Rush. In fact, it's the ONLY reason I can think of why Garafolo was cast, and I'd bet good, hard cash that it's the REAL reason she was cast. Had they ended up making her a bad guy, that would have at least been gratifying and redeemed the show. But her bland, vaguely unpleasant charater had zero intrigue, and so clearly her choice was completely political. That makes this season even more disgusting.

I agree that there's a bone to pick with Rush for raving over the show at the start of the season. To paraphrase a classic line from Aliens, one of my top ten favorite movies:

"It was a bad call, Rush. It was a bad call."

I have been a BIG 24 fan. Not anymore!!! They went out of their way to get a Bush (Wilson) look alike. Along with the Born again Muslim Jack Bauer. Why in the world would Jack Bauer ever become a Muslim?

They also were taking a huge slam at Lockheed and Blackwater.

The show jumped the Liberal Shark.

Rush! Where are you on this?????

Went out of their way to get a Bush look-alike?

Are you nuts?

First of all, Will Patton doesn't look at all like George W. Bush. Secondly, Patton has made a career of the types of roles - the low-key, behind the scenes, evil guy. Third, you might want to check the mirror - your paranoia is showing.

I have ONE Entemenns Choc Donut, FOUR Jello Chocolate Puddings, one piece of Sara Lee cake and a full, unopened bag of Doves Milk Chocolate and four Sara Lee Chocolate Mint cookies...

In the words of the immortal jazz musician and singer Eddie Harris:

I had three doughnuts and two cups of coffee, but that didn’t stop my appetite.
I had only eaten a box of cookies very late last night.
I had ten pancakes, plenty of syrup and butter, and two slices of ham,
Three eggs, corn fries, and four biscuits, all smothered in jam.
Two glass of milk and a cheesecake. I thought I didn’t want any more.
I just had to buy 12 of those mints in that bowl by the door....
Certainly would like a taste of some of that coffee cake over there – sure look good!
Lord have mercy.

For those that know how to use a search engine.

Google: “Will Patton looks like Bush”

So before this episode of 24 was made people were saying this actor looked like Bush.

Gee! What are the odds?

On further retrospection this season has had some very unsettling leftist turns:
1. A famous leftist (Jeanine Garofalo) was recruited to play on this show. I guess James Carville was too busy.
2. Jack became a Muslim. Because Islam is forgiving of guys that torture Muslims.
3. The biggest and baddest villain ever on 24 looked like Bush. This was known before the episode was filmed. So is it an oversight or was it intended?
4. The show promoted Global Warming commercials with almost every actor.
5. Blackwater and aerospace companies were maligned.
6. The FBI will torture when given a chance. Just not CTU.
7. The most conservative writers have left the show. This is according to Garofalo.
8. The implication was strong that terrorist activity is managed by evil white people, and not Islamic fundamentalists.

Nice work, keeping this all together this season.

A note to the Producers, et al, of 24: This season, as in most of the others, was about 3/4 s great and 1/4 “Eh?”. If you want to strengthen it next year, instead of adding ridiculous filler, and plot devices, let Jack take a 6 hour “Power Nap” after the first 12, then finish strong in the last 6, it still adds up to 24, and maybe some of us won’t get as frustrated,

Jack didn’t become a muslim, just talked to the first religious person he’d met in years when he felt he was doomed. Big difference, and no big deal.

I don’t care for islam but I’ve met, lived among, and worked with many muslims who almost without exception were decent people. That doesn’t make me one either.

I would say that most of the Muslims Jack has met were not good people. Jack talking to a Islamic Cleric and taking him into his confidence is totally out of character. Look at Jack’s character in context of the series. It is a huge departure in the context of the series.

So Jack had a death bed experience with a Muslim Cleric and he didn’t become a Muslim? So I guess Jack is confused. So this Cleric had no power or authority to forgive Jack? If Jack didn’t believe this guy had any authority why talk to him.

I guess all the Catholic, Protestant and Jewish Clerics were all too busy in that big hospital???

At the very least this was manipulative from the writers.

My general point on this thread that I am trying to make here is that this season of 24 tried to manipulate conservatives. Apparently they succeeded.

The Fox series will shoot the majority of its New York City scenes in Los Angeles, though hopefully with greater believability than Seinfeld did with its pristine and sun-drenched sidewalks.

Every city in the country actually DOES have hills like this in the background, even Manhattan.

We saw poor "Behroooooz"'s 24 mother on another show recently and my poor family had to constantly hear my excellent imitation of her husky voice moaning for her son.

I think you could get some good confessions at Gitmo out of her annoying whine.

White Americans are the bad guys and muslims are the ‘real’ good guys.

And the leader of the evildoers is a small Jewish guy.

And if we do have to look at Garofalo in a purple vinyl shirt again next season, I personally will buy her a supportive sports bra.

We did the same thing. Started watching during one of the Palmer administrations after hearing Rush rave, and fell hard for the show. We watched season 5, the one with the Logans (BRILLIANT ACTING) in the White House, and went out and got all the other seasons. We watched a lot of them one summer in Hawaii, staying up too late each night watching episode after episode.

I agree that stupid decisions were made by the President in this one, and of course her weak and clueless husband. He turned out to be such a spineless flake that Jack should have left him under that takeout place. But stupid decisions were made by others as well. Didn’t Palmer allow his ex-wife back into the West Wing?

The Muslim cleric at the end was atrocious. Especially since it contrasted with the recent discovery that Mr. Big, the one who killed everyone in all former seasons, as well as the current President’s son, Michelle, and all things bright and beautiful, was a little nebbishy Jewish guy. One can only imagine what the Imam responded with when Jack told him. (Hint: Mel Gibson would no doubt agree.)

But you are right about the writing. So much was never followed up. The beginning of the day was all about Singala or San Galla, and of course the evil Djuma and his pasta-craving illegal alien henchman. But they dropped that plotline so fast that I forgot all about the entire continent of Africa for the last couple of months, which probably was quite the opposite of the producers’ One World dream.

And indeed, Garofalo should have only been cast to be blown to bits at some point. She can’t act her way out of a recycled bag.

It was still fun to watch the season, but next time more plot stability and less Lebanese women.

The best thing I got from this season is a great impression of the Tony Almeida sideways snarl. They should definitely make a cocktail called the Almeida and it should be nearly 100% bitters.

Best thing on TV in my opinion ... I watched every episode twice.

Wilson? Is that a Jewish name? I didn't catch two things I see on these threads: first, that Jack "converted" to Islam -- I thought he just talked with the Imam for deathbed comfort, but then again, I didn't hear the entire conversation because sweetz and I were talking a bit. Second, that Wilson, the bad-guy Bush look-alike (hadn't caught that sublety, either, but it certainly is true), was Jewish. That must have gone right over my head.

You crack me up about staying up so late at night watching episode after episode -- we did the same thing! This was the ONLY season so far that I didn't look forward to every episode. I even fell asleep during one show. The only reason I watched it was to indulge my husband; left to my own, I would have quit after the first few episodes, and I wouldn't have done that in years prior.

The best thing I got from this season is a great impression of the Tony Almeida sideways snarl. They should definitely make a cocktail called the Almeida and it should be nearly 100% bitters.

LOL! Perfect! Serve them at your next party! I got to meet and observe at a race track Carlos Bernard, but it was before I got hooked on 24, so all I knew about him at the time was that he was a TV actor, formerly from soap operas. He's extremely handsome in a steamy kind of way, quiet, intense, a very competitive personality, and 1000 percent male -- there was nothing "feminized" about him in the slightest. Remember the black guy, Curtis, from earier episodes? I also got to meet him. He is SO-O-O much more handsome in person than on the camera, who knows why. He was gentle, extremely smart and self-driven -- has been a professional pilot -- and filled with love for life. I was so bummed when he got kacked on one of the episodes!

Jack asked the Imam for forgiveness. How can one man forgive Jack unless Jack believes that this cleric has “powers” to forgive. Kind of makes Jack a believer in Islam.

The other glossed over point is that ALL of the terror (entire series) including the assassination of David Palmer was directed from Wilson (You know the guy that resembles Bush).

These are only a few complaints I have of this show (season 7)and how they are trying to make fools of conservatives.

Maybe next season the title of the show should be changed to: “24 Reasons I am a Liberal”.

I think conservatives aren’t as discerning as I thought.

Good article, hell -- GREAT article! Thanks for the link. I am enjoying the comments as much as the original commentary. Smack dab on the money so far (still reading them). No mention of Garafolo in the original article, but I stand by my charge: that she was cast solely as a snub to the conservative viewership that came on board as a result of Rush's enthusiasm for the show. They obviously didn't choose Garafolo for her acting or personal appeal, as she is thoroughly mediocre in every way as she plays the character. If I didn't know who she was, the Janis Gold character would be a minor one indeed in my mind, as Garafolo brings zero intrigue except a faint nastiness.

You are totally welcomed. Glad you liked it. I agree with you about the casting.

I think there was a whole lot more “planning” on what they did this season just to slam the right. Rush and Laura Ingraham where is you analysis on this. Leadership is needed here! They were big fans (so was I) but the producers have stabbed us all in the back.

Hopefully freerepublic won't let the writers/producers get away with this.

People at my office were hoping that she (GoshAwfolo)was going to be the mole at the FBI.

Just noticed something while watching Season 3 of 24, 3:00am - 4:00am...

Tony Todd, the actor who just played General Benjamin Juma on Season 7, also played Detective Norris in the aforementioned episode. Norris questioned both Julia Miliken and Sherry Palmer with regards to their roles in the death of David Palmer nemesis Alan Miliken.

Apologies if folks figured this out way before now.

Just noticed something else...from Season 4 of “24” -

In the special features, during the 7pm - 8pm block, when Jack and Paul Raines were in the gun shop with the two boys, an extended scene showed their father, played by Adoni Maropis.

They didn’t use him in this scene, nor was he even credited for it on IMDB, but he did play a large part in a future 24 role - terrorist Abu Fayed in Day 6.

I guess he hung around until he “hung around”...
