>>>>>But I took my bowl with the yeast in it to the goat when I milked and milked a cup or two onto the dry yeast, covered it to keep the heat in and went on with my milking.

Right temperature or enzymes in the milk, I don’t know, but it can’t be matched, one of my brain storms that worked.

And I used goose eggs in them.<<<<<

I can see them trying to follow the ‘revised’ recipe - put my yeast in a bowl and run down to the local goat milker and get them to milk a couple of cups into my bowl then cover and run to.... Now where do I get those danged goose eggs.....

I used to have about 50 White Pekin ducks and loved their eggs. Almost as big as a goose egg and much richer than a chicken egg. Problem was they would lay them all over the place and you had to float test them and candle them cuz you had no idea how old they were.

Several good sewing ideas, but I like this and the photos of good and useful quilts:

The Quilts are on their way...
The Quilts were blessed on Sunday and packed up for delivery to Lutheran World Relief - here are mine in the sanctuary with the other quilts ready to be blessed...

And the plans/instructions for making a hat that would work to keep the sun off you.

All the ones I ever had roosted in trees. They are all dark meat that while flavorful, doesn’t compare to a good chicken. (grin)<<<

Lacking trees, mine took up housekeeping in the haystack.

LOL, I didn’t eat mine, I just loved them.

They make regular patrols and want the trip, as it was the last time it was made and do raise a fuss if something changes.

I don’t remember mine being so careless with the eggs.

In Texas there were Banty hens that did not live in the chicken house, and they had nests in some of the strangest places.

The loved hiding in the old car parts, in the junk pile, a
Model A fender would be just the ticket for a Banty nest.

Did you ever keep the Indian Runner Duck?

I still want to add enough black to one and turn it into a Penquin.

They are said to be the best egg layer and are very popular in Australia.

I am with you, cannot knit, but have crocheted many many items, including clothing and wall hangings.

Loved making crocheted baskets.

I have a large collection of knitting needles, bought them at auction, at least 50 years ago.

LOL, the small ones like her skewers, I have used to turn things inside out in sewing and for applying glue to projects and many other projects..

I offered to help, but none every took me up on it.

For one of the meetings, I took a chocolate cake a tube cake.

When I was making it, I noticed some home made fudge crumbs and they were dried out, so I tossed them in the cake pan.

LOL, when we cut the cake I had a fudge lined tunnel in the middle of it.

Have tried to do it again and it never made the tunnel for me again.

And as always my favorite survival site. by John Wesley Rawles http://survivalblog.com who wrote “Patriots: Surviving the coming collapse”. There is a realty section for those interested and a section showing the 19 best states for self sufficient living/retreats. Me, I’m staying here in good ole Missouri and will make do with what I have should it come down to it.

For those who want to hook up with like minded folks you can get to
http://www.survivalistbooks.com/survivalistgroups.htm

He is a strong Christian man who is not into commando type groups, racists or any other kooks. Just self sufficient living in case of TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it). I’m not into it at all like he is but it provides wonderful information.

Anyway, the site has tons of information, way more than I’ll ever be able to read.

As a side not on the wine making thing, a friends dad made wine. Every year he gave us a bottle. Man! I can drink wine just fine but one glass of that would get you pretty tipsy, 2 would knock you on your butt!

Wine would be a good trading commodity if things were to go bad. That, ammo, magazines, nickels 1964 and before (have real nickel and easier to trade than gold).

I keep a “to go” bag in my truck. Keep all kinds of handy things that I can use on the road and I take it camping. Has a sewing kit, mirror (for signaling if I were lost), a whistle (again if lost, yelling your voice runs out), wipes, a deck of cards, lighters and fire making supplies, aspirin, a small tool kit, allergy meds, oh tons of stuff I can’t think of right now. It’s handy if ever the ice gets us like last year, or if I ended up having to go to a shelter for a tornado or just every day stuff. Guy at work lost a button, hey, hold on I’ll grab my sewing kit. Daughter and I got sweet and sour to go, all sticky, hold on, I’ll grab some wipes from the bag. So handy in many ways and you can get on sites to see what is needed to keep.

And don’t forget to get on freecycle to see if people will get you empty wine bottles. Of course you’d have to sterilize but why pay when you can get for free?

An added plus, it’s “carbon friendly” and saves them from being thrown in the local dump.

Pseudo Felted Slippers
There may be vegan fibers suitable for felting - check out this amazing site - Liora Manne but I figure that since felting shrinks the wool - I could approximate it by knitting very tightly...

You’ll need to knit a fairly square square - mine is 45 stitches by 65 rows on size 4 needles with two strands of worsted - just knit until your square measures about 1 inch longer than your foot...

The yarn is from my stash and I’m pretty sure the blue is Caron Simply Soft but I have no idea what the brown is...

I want the (slightly more interesting) purl side to the outside so fold the square into a triangle and seam up the bottom and about 3 to 4 inches up the back...

Turn them inside out and turn the tops down - now they look like some pointy little elfine booties - eh?

Thread a craft needle with about 12 inches of yarn and tack the little pointy toe back to the top of the booty - tie tightly and leave the thread there - we’ll use it in a minute to attach the pompoms...

Wrap a couple of feet of yarn around a 1 inch piece of cardboard a few times and then pull the thread from the toe through the bottom of the wraps and tie tightly - then snip through the tops of the wraps and voila - you have a pompom...

Snip the ends of the toe thread that you tied the pompom with to match the length of the pompom...

Put your feet up and enjoy your cozy toes...

These are the same booties that I made for the Man-Cub last Christmas Triangle Booties- see it only takes me a year to get the pattern to ya’...

Even I could take a square and make this shoe, It would be a good one for pieces of my old wool army blanket, except that I won’t cut it up, doubled, it makes a warm lap robe and I like it better for keeping the cold out, than my fancy crocheted afghans.

An old wool coat from Goodwill, should give several pairs of warm house slippers.

P.S. several neat knitting patterns on this page.

Thank you, you do a good job of sharing your knowledge too.

Smiling and thinking of how smart some of you are.

I will check out your Survival Blog.

There is so much to learn and due to poor health, I can’t do much more than think about it all and remember what I have learned over the years.

Thank you for joining the thread.

That is a great idea. I can easily do that as I have Acrobat Professional and will upload those soon. I will notify you in particular and anyone else who wants to download the files.

Everyone, if you want the first 9000 posts of the original survival thread in ACROBAT format, I’ll be posting that soon. Let me know if you’d like either a ping or a FReepmail.

Thanks all! TAC

1. Thank you... I am still trying to download Part II - danged dialup... So far on 3rd try - maybe this time 13.4 MB so far - 1 hr 22 min left... 8.1 MB to go...

Oh, did you know that you can take it from word and export the document as a pdf. - At least you can in Open Office.

2. Had to think of you when I saw the following:
21 States Claiming Sovereignty

Ernest Hancock
Freedom’s Phoenix
February 12, 2009

21 States Claiming Sovereignty: AZ, AL, AK, AR, CA, CO, GA, HI, ID, IN, KS, ME, MI, MO, MT, NH, NV, OK, PA, TX, & WA

http://www.mrstep.com/politics/az-wa-mo-nh-ok-claiming-sovereignty/

Wow… it will be interesting to see how this turns out… it’s about time people started stepping up and speaking out. As people have pointed out in comments, all of these (except for HI) are explicit restatements of what has always been in place, but not necessarily enforced, as detailed by the 10th Amendment. HI is actually aiming for total sovereignty as it is claimed that HI was never really a state of the U.S. to begin with. However, I believe the intent of these bills is to let the federal government know that the states’ sovereignty will not be overwritten… say in case certain gun ban laws get passed… or other “War Time / Martial Law” type plans come into play.

The article that I read, said a pot of roots gave her a steady supply of onion tops, she did not mention round onions, or I forgot if she did.

Well I put the first one down... with the roots and about 1/2 inch of onion attached. We'll see.
