TV rivals with a conservative message: "Heroes" vs. "24" in same time slot
Vanity | 03-24-09 | Me

Thank goodness for the wonder of DVR technology. I was able to see both of these last night.

Did any of you manage to see these both? We all know "24" and its edge-of-your-seat national security threats, but I was caught a bit off guard by "Heroes" and this latest episode. Swoosie Kurtz was eating at a diner, and she was reading a book, "RONALD REAGAN - An American life". As the episode progressed, it seemed clear to me that the producers were equating the oppression we conservatives are feeling right now to the witch hunt the "Heroes" in the story were going through.

I found it refreshing, because I had assumed "Heroes" producers were unabashed liberals like the rest of Hollywood.

I like both shows but Heroes doesn’t seem very conservative to me. I mean, the whole mutants wrongly being hauled around in orange terrorist jumpsuits? And the crazy government soldier guys?

Chuck has a character (Casey, the tough NSA guy played by Adam Baldwin, formerly of Firefly) that has a picture of Ronald Reagan that’s featured prominently in several episodes. In the latest episode, his boss (a woman who is not necessarily a good guy) picks it up, tells him that the 80s are over, and he just sort of sneers at her suggestion. As for putting Heroes up against 24 (and for putting Chuck up against The Big Bang Theory), are television programmers trying to kill off their networks by placing shows that appeal to the same demographic up against each other? When they do that, they split the audience and often kill one or both shows in the process. Stupid.

Mondays are a crowded evening ... House, 24, Heroes, Big Bang Theory. We end up DVRing and watching throughout the week.

“the whole mutants wrongly being hauled around in orange terrorist jumpsuits?”

I don’t watch Heroes, but why is it that when you peel back all the layers of bad guys in 24, it’s always the white male at the core? This year it’s the Blackwater look-alike, Starkwood, that’s doing anything for profit.

Sounds like MoveOn’s been scripting this one...

Try this parallel...the "heroes" are those who work hard and prosper - "the haves." The crazy government soldier guys are Nancy, Barney, Harry, Chuck and Timmy plus the rest of OreoBama's crew, who want to take "the haves" out of circulation until they can determine how to protect the "have nots" from them.

It's true in a way. If you think about it, islamic extremists, illegal immigrants, and Barack Obama couldn't be doing what they're doing were it not for latte-sipping white chicks and their boyfriends at Starbucks. No offense to Starbucks who's Baristas are usually hot.

If you watched this weeks episode of “Heroes”, in a parking garage, while in hiding, the character “Tracy” asked a question to the character “Rebel” that involved behaving just like Che Guevara. I thought that was a strange question to ask.

Yep, his answer was that Che was a revolutionary he was starting a rebellion. Would have been better to say that he Che was a murderer but hey what do I know. Thought it was a good episode regardless.

Chuck is a riot. Discovered it after season two started. So we used Netflix to get season one. Hilarious. The characters work so well together, and Zachary Levi (Chuck) has perfect comedic timing (the whole cast does pretty darn well, actually). I love Baldwin’s character.

Roll over! Play Dead!

How else does one behave like they are full of bullet holes?

He did not say that. He said that he was doing a rebellion, and Che did a revolution.

Here’s the dictionary.com definitions of the 2, and I don’t know Rebel’s point.

revoluion: an overthrow or repudiation and the thorough replacement of an established government or political system by the people governed.

rebellion: open, organized, and armed resistance to one’s government or ruler.

Never seen Heroes......but a dual-tuner TiVo takes care of the problem of viewing both.

Heroes is NOT conservative. I enjoy the show but remember...the mutants are all called terrorists and the gov't want to kill and torture them. They're really 'moderates' who are different and we're just scared of their differences so we call them terrorists. That's not a conservative message.

24 isn't very conservative this season either. We've got a bleeding heart President who wants to invade a country that's of no strategic importance to the USA and where our interests are not in danger, to stop a genocide...even as American civilians are killed in the hundreds.

What’s the witchhunt plot about? Is it like X-men (the comics and the movies) where mutants are supposed to be a poor put upon minority where some of them have gathered together as a Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (their own name not mine) hellbent on global domination and where even the HEROES(!) engage in identity theft (masquerading as famous people, including politicos they disagree with) and invasion of privacy (telepathicly reading minds, turning invisible to spy on people, etc.).

Yeah, those poor mutants don’t mean nobody any harm.

And don’t forget that the real bad guys in 24 this season is a Halliburton clone company called Starkwood.
