Yes you did it right. Years ago our little cat Salt took a long time to die...I didn’t want to put him down—let it go too far with him keeping his mouth open all the time in a ghastly death look. Finally took him to the Vet. to put him down—he was a fighter but we could have spared him some misery a lot sooner.
Beautiful picture of your Tucker! I know you are thankful to have it along with all the beautiful memories.
They truly are our fur babies and losing them is heartrending. God bless.

Reading this thread brings back the raw emotions I felt when we had to put our fur baby to sleep. But, there is a sense of fellowship too, because so many others know and understand.
Just remember all the love that was received by your pet and the love you received in return, and you will know beyond doubt that he knew you loved him.
They have a way of knowing beyond words what we feel toward them. You did the right thing, and it was done with love.

Thats exactly how my cat is acting. He just lays and stares at the wall. He still eats some but it seems hard for him. Its like he knows he should eat but he doesn't really want it. Today we had made the decision to do it but then my husband decided to give him his medicine for a few more days and see if it helped. His tumors have doubled in size in just a couple of weeks. Poor baby. I think once its done, I can start healing but right now the grief is constant. Its tough watching your best friend die and not having the strength to help him pass. And I am so sick of crying!
My kitty is 14 yrs old, too. How long did she do that before she died?

I know your pain. But, I think your cat has already made his decision. Now you need to help him. If you think the meds will help - keep doing that. But if it is just to prolong things, the only thing your prolonging is your grief and his suffering. Be strong. And good luck.
Prayers for your cat and for you. It’s never easy to lose a friend. And I’ve found animals are some of the best people. Hang in there.
I too swore no more pets! But as firm as I was in that resolve it was not to be! I just moved the family to our new home (our Galt's Gulch!) and lo and behold, guess what awaited us when we unloaded the rig? Yep! Way out here in the boondocks, 12 miles from civilization, stood a young healthy mouser who evidently survived the winter (47 below) by living underneath the house next to the furnace, and clearing out the mouse population! It will make a good barn cat... and already has given salve to the pain in my heart from losing my 19 year old~!
I suggest you consider getting owned by another furball as well! It will soon make your heart smile again too!

Had to put my 15-year old calico down a few years ago, (her little head in my hand as she looked into my eyes) and I wept like a baby (I work with combat aircraft and play hard-contact sports - so I'm not exactly a softie).
I had to do that with my cat, Bigun. We got her when my husband was stationed in Turkey and she moved all over the world with us. She got kidney failure and I spent a ton of money on her trying to save her. Came home from work one day and she was laying in her litter box with litter in her mouth. I knew that she was worth more than that so I took her to the vet. I couldn’t stay while it happened but did have a nice funeral for her at the pet cemetary. I had her for 16 years and I still miss her today! That happened in 2005 and I think of her every day. She was a very good friend.
Motorola only stared at the wall for a couple (2/3) days and I can’t remember now if I took her and had her put to sleep or she died here at home. I am thinking she died here at home. I remember I took her food and water to her at the place she chose but she wouldn’t even look at it. I am sad for your kitty (and you).
Thank you. My kitty isn’t hardly that bad yet. He lays and stares at the wall most of the time but hes been doing that for a week now. He still eats pretty good and responds when we talk to him and purrs when we pet him. He goes to his food dish. But he is so terribly skinny. He is very weak, too. He can’t walk very far without laying down. He still goes to his litter pan and grooms himself a little. But he is dying. I know that. But as long as he is doing this well, I am going to wait about putting him to sleep.
