Does Mel Gibson's wife deserve half his fortune? ($500 Million)
The Australian Telegraph ^ | April 16, 2009 12:01am

THREE cheers for feminism. With a desperate lack of anything worthwhile to aim their gunsights at, they turn on self-made billionaire Mel Gibson to support his estranged wife Robyn's demands for half his $US1 billion fortune.

The problem with absurd demands like this, underwritten by feminist approval, is that the girls always want it both ways.

For many years Robyn was prepared to remain at home as a loving wife. Retired as a dental nurse, supported by her husband.

Now, after the marriage has soured, Gibson has to pay for the life she apparently "gave up" to run their home, slave over a stove, and clean and raise their kids so he could make their millions.

I'm confused. Does that mean the traditional homemaking duties are not acts of love but merely bargaining chips in case of an iceberg down the line?

Over 28 years her claim for $500,000,000 works out at $4879 a day. Or $34,153 a week.

To argue that they are living in California, entitling her to half the fortune under California law, is once again more evidence of wanting it both ways.

It penalises Gibson for once having faith in his marriage and believing it would last.

Imagine the outcry if he had insisted on a pre-nup, to be applied retroactively, when they moved to California.

For years Gibson has taken the bullets that are a by-product of his fortune - privacy invasions, critical attacks, slander.

It entitles Gibson to keep the greater share of his wealth, a fortune amassed through his own creative genius.

Only a handful of people in the world have the talent to do what he does.

The argument that without Robyn's support he would never have succeeded is just desperate. The truer argument is that talent finds a way.

It’s true.

Take my word for it, and stay married so you don’t have to find out the hard way.

If my wife wanted a divorce, I’d give her half of everything as long as she didn’t do anything like cheat on me.

I’d feel glad she only wanted half if I did something stupid like Mel Gibson.

I don’t get the hangup with money, especially when you are already worth a billion dollars. This woman bore his children, supported him when he was down, and then had to deal with some major insanity and infidelity.

If I were Mel, my conscience would make me give her most of it. It’s only money folks.

How about a 100K per kid she popped out, plus 50K a year working as a housewife? Those are close to fair market rates for those skills.

Nope, she remained faithful and he didn't. There was not an equal amount of work done.

My point was one picture does not tell the whole story. I don’t know what else was going on in their marriage

As a man, normally, I would say “Half?” are you out of your mind. However, marriage is a 50-50 proposition without a prenup. And even so, in this instance, my understanding is that his wife always helped him even before their marriage.

She was a Dental Assistant or something like that and made the bulk of the money until his first big hit.

She probably made all his personal arrangements, kept their house beautiful, raised children, etc. She was also his prop for public events and probably assisted him in getting ready for them.

she may have been part mother, part wife and part estate manager. Knowing wives like this and a few estate managers, who in and of themselves become “Rent a Wife” I can tell you it is a hell of a lot of work.

Take preparing for a party or a viewing of a short for promoting to investors for instance. I have been to many parties that would blow you away and they absolutely do not happen the morning you get up.

You have to decide a theme, who comes. what time will the event start/end, how much of the food and decorating will you do? How much is catered. What is that food. design the menu, map it out, dry run.

Just prepping food takes a minimum of three days for a party of 12. That is after you go grocery shopping on the list you spent days preparing and consulting with other over.

You still have to decide what the decorations will be, how will the table be staged. “Oh darn! I thought that would look good”. No what? Use something else or go shopping for another, whatever, you need to complete the table, room and entrance to the your house.

The day of the party for say 12 people you start at 6 or 7 am and go non-stop. Finishing touches are prepped, caviar dishes staged and iced at the last minute(if it's that). Had a friend prepare caviar a la Mexican style last week. Don't ask what was in it, I don't care about Caviar. Not that it doesn't taste good. It just doesn't do anything for me.

Say the guests arrive at 5:30. Hopefully, the bartender you hired will be there because these guys came in a limo and are going to drink. Alot. What do you know about drinks anyway. Except you like to drink them.

Now everyone goes to wherever you have decided to begin the reception and in the back of your mind you are thinking “I really hope those two servers are on time and know how to serve.

Remember you are the wife of a powerful movie star, not some food runner.

You make pleasant with everyone, charm them. Of course you did you research before they came and got briefed on them by anyone who knows them. You need to know everything because this dinner is important to your husband who has briefed you why this event is important and has also briefed you on the intricacies of the personalities.

You manage the entire affair, which goes on until 12:00am. Everyone is having a good time, they loved the concept of the movie, building, restaurant or whatever project is being promoted.

They leave and your husband smiles and thanks you for the hard work and proclaims success, thank you for the event and your charm.

Now to manage the staff to get the place back in order. No sleep until three am.

So, no, was more than a wife and probably deserves 50%. I personally would just say I am sorry for being someone you don't deserve and write the check.

I go to these events all the time and even act as a waiter sometimes, a dishwasher at others, while others I am a guest.

the life she apparently "gave up" to run their home, slave over a stove, and clean and raise their kids

$1 billion means there was sufficient funds for maids and such. I'd be surprised to learn even in the early days that she was doing much stove slaving or house cleaning. Still, he must have known the consequence of living in a community property state. Time to pony up!

I want to put all of this in perspective to you:

1) Illusion of wealth through debt creation and the Central Banking model of fractional reserve lending creates perversions of society at all levels.

2) The equality movement with women was turned into something noble in the early 1900’s into getting two incomes to tax and chain into debt for life. That happened. I believe society will be better long-term if women are more independent.

3) My wife (who is now basically an ex) and many of my colleagues wives and girlfriends are all going through a women’s liberation movement that has provided them with a temporary period of opolitical over-empowerment. As the economy has gotten tougher, women in the USA choose escapism more time then not, because in there minds they believe they will get not only half, but the kids, child support, no debts just the liquidation money of the assets at divorce(lawyers tell them this will occur, a blatant lie of course). I am painting broad strokes so please forgive me for you women that are old school and respectful to your men. You are dying breed in the current era, a shame.

4) Back top point #1 and men. The excess created by debt has created a male whom is bombarded by sexual advertising, access to limitless pornography and the ability to try and act like a stud on a credit card and other forms of debt/overleveraging. A ‘real’ man must now watch what he says or be tossed out of his home with a phone call and restraining order. This has begun to create a leadership vacuum in government. Both men and women can and should be in government and both need to be stable emotionally and using common sense. Point #1 skews judgement and warps the society. Money is our god, but it’s not money that’s the real problem but the debt.

Women whom are currently going off the deep end as I explained will find themselves without family and penniless in about three years. The U.S. economy will collapse. These will become street prostitutes and there will be many and they will be abused. When I realize what will occur at first I smiled and thought to myself ‘good, they deserve it, that miserable lot of selfish &^&)_%$#. But then I quickly remember point #1 and know I must be forgiving to all men and women mislead. All will continue to be humbled and monetary and societal behaviors will return to equalibrium but with much pain in between.

Hopefully America can see the debt/slavery model of private banking interests (specifically Central Banking) for what it really is. America has a monetary lending problem that has bankrupted the nation. When we restructure we should leave the baggage of Central Banking behind. Gibson will be fine. He’ll join the growing ranks of men and women whom feel they should never bother to be married in this era. A shame for marriage was never supposed to be a ‘contract’ regulated by the State. It was supposed to be a mutual protection covenant with fringe benefits, observed by family celebrating a stronger union of two people, male and female.

Don’t be silly. The marital assets are jointly owned, splitting them equally doesn’t actually entail buying the other out, that was a figure of speech.

Unless the married couple owns business were one partner is going to have to come up with the cash value of half the business value in order to avoid selling it. Lots of business have been bankrupted by divorce, which is why self employed businessmen shouldn’t play hanky panky with their employees.

The author of this screed does not have any idea of California family law. She is, and will get, half of his assets from day one of their marriage.

I have to say I agree with you and I am a guy. The wife cheated on me and she is going bye-bye. But I still feel she deserves half. She was tireless raising our two boys and tried her best to defeat her problems. I am friends now with her and we still live under the same roof, slowly undwinding things and planning. Kids stay sane, she is growing up a bit and I am soon to have a better quality of life. Hard path and lots of pain for me but I have found it worth it for the fam.
