Judge orders dogs put down after attack on woman

The court ordered resolution to a dog attack complaint earlier in the month in Theresa has left the people on both sides with mixed emotions.

Thursday, both the victim and the dog owners expressed feelings of sadness for each other.

On the afternoon of April 19th 70-year-old Linda Wilcox of 109 Commercial Street, Theresa was walking in front of the Riverside Avenue residence of Mary Cook when she was attacked by three pit bull terriers.

The dogs, two female adults and a 4-month-old female puppy, owned by Ms. Cook and her daughter, knocked Mrs. Wilcox to the ground and inflicted several painful, bloody bites.

A passerby came to Mrs. Wilcox’s aid, chased the dogs away and called for help. The man told Mrs. Wilcox they same dogs had attacked him a short time earlier.

Tuesday the two sides met in Town of Theresa Court where Judge George Rollinson ordered the animals to be destroyed. Ms. Cook has until Tuesday, May 5th to comply with the order.

Cook said she is resigned to the impending loss of her pets, but feels the judge’s decision was extreme.

“These pit bulls are really nice dogs…they’re just like my kids,” said Ms. Cook. “Now they’re putting my dogs to sleep and I don’t think that’s right.”

Ms. Cook also regrets the pain suffered by Mrs. Wilcox.

“I feel sorry for her,” said Cook.

Mrs. Wilcox told NewsWatch50 she is sad for Ms. Cook and her family.

“I feel bad that they’ve got to put these pets away, and I realize they’re pets, but that kind of dog shouldn’t be a pet,” said Wilcox. “I feel bad for them because I know they are attached to these animals.”

Certainly if it had been a different breed it wouldn’t have been a news story. On the other hand ALL dog owners need to be responsible and keep their dogs properly confined.

Never said I was offended. I simply pointed out that you were not really correct in what you said. From the wounds it doesn’t even appear that they intended to kill her.

So then, again, what pit owners were you referring to, in reference to someone’s post TO ME?

Excuse me, but when pit bulls attack, they don’t usually just stop as in “ok, I’m done bloodying you now”

Your level of expertise in dogs would be....? Did you look at the wounds suffered in this case? They are in the slide show. Either this attack was stopped as it began or the dog(s) (from the wounds they show it is not clear to me that more than one dog bit this woman) were not intending to *kill* her. However, maybe you have more dog expertise, so I’m quite interested in what you have to say.

And if this was another breed, perhaps they’d have been given a pass.

This is why I can't stand "breed specific" legislation. I don't care if you've got a poodle, pomeranian, or pit bull - if it attacks someone unprovoked (e.g. defending a homeowner from an intruder), it should be DRT. With all of the good-tempered dogs being put down in shelters daily, there is no excuse to keep a vicious one as a pet.

LOl that’s what I figured. You are just popping off based on what the media writes. Thank you for clarifying that.

Which of course is logical, so it’s not what people want to do! ;)
I put a golden to sleep once for biting me. FWIW she was actually attacking another dog, and I got in the middle. But i had small kids at the time and I just couldn’t take the chance that they would get bitten.

I may have missed something (I only read what was posted)

You Wrote;

but it doesn't’t appear the dogs chased her down and attacked her and I don’t think the dogs were trying to eat her. It was really a poorly written story, I can’t tell what happened. I agree with the judges decision to euthanize the dogs, but I’m not sure what happened. Were the dogs loose in the owners front yard? Did they escape from an enclosure?

Parsing words “I don't think the dogs were trying to eat her”
“It doesn't appear the dogs chased her down and attacked her”
I don't know you, I don't know if you own dogs and you may be the sweetest person in the world, but you seem to take offense at anothers wording and had to inform them. I think everyone that read the story understand and don't have to have more information to determine the dogs are vicious. But I agree with you on one thing, the dogs needed to be put down.

I didn’t take any offense (not sure why anyone thinks someone has to be offended to desire an accurate accounting of things). parsing words? No, desiring accuracy. Nothing more. I have seen you on these threads and you (along with a very vocal, small contingent) have a real anger going about pit bulls. I don’t know why, and honestly I don’t care (when asked people just get very huffy and refuse to tell me what expertise they have on the topic). But, if folks are going to expound an opinion, the rest of us deserve to know why we should take it with more than a grain of salt.
This particular article shouldn’t terrify anyone about any particular breed. The wounds were no more than you would get with many other breeds, so other than the fact that it appears the dogs attacked for no reason (while on or very near their own property—it is not clear how they were able to get to the woman from the article—were they at large or were they improperly contained?), there’s not much to the story. Of course, anyone who hates pit bulls will file this in the crazy pit bull file, while if it had been any other breed of dog, it would probably not have made the papers, much less FR.
And, you never did tell me why you posted TO ME about people and who have pit bulls. I do not have pits, I have golden retrievers.
Once more. Accuracy. That was my goal. What’s yours?

My last rescue dog is possibility part pit (per the vet) I have no vendetta against them...But also I am not deaf, dumb and blind to their potential to become violent at the drop of a hat..Some pit owners wouldn't even admit that...that attitude is my problem. Plus the vendetta against Chets posting...I don't know Chet, but he has the right to post within the guide lines of Free Republic without being harassed by those owners of this breed and their fanaticism about the posts.. Even after being informed by the moderator about his articles not being spam, some just cannot help themselves asking others to continue hitting the abuse button..Those are the fanatic's
