And yes, the snake in the first post is the yellow-bellied water snake.

And no, the yellow does not extend that far down the snake's body.

Only about six inches or so below the head, which has a completely different shape.

It's a cottonmouth.

Y'all go ahead and respect 'em, I'll continue killing 'em.

The snake in our logo is the speckled king snake, not the yellow-bellied water snake. I was talking about the snake in your first post, the snake you took a picture of IS a yellow bellied water snake. It is NOT a cottonmouth. I know for a fact 100%. My husband is a snake expert, has studied snakes for 40 years, and that snake was not a cottonmouth. I don’t know what makes you get off on killing snakes. Just leave em alone and they’ll leave you alone. They do a lot of good. Eating rodents, and even the venomous ones are used for medical research (venom helps with blood clots, cancer research etc).

You reminded me of another important Respect-a-thon.

04/06/09: International Respect for Chickens Day May 4, 2009

Truly a shame we missed it.

Oh well, there’s always next year.

I think you showed remarkable self-control but waiting long enough to take the pictures first. If my wife ever spotted something like that in my yard the result would be a huge smoking crater where the back yard used to be. Fortunately other than a garter snake or two - which she still doesn’t know about - I haven’t seen anything nasty in the yard. Some neighboring suburbs will get rattlers but that’s about it.

I agree it's cotton mouth moccasin. Kill ‘em all and let Mother Nature sort ‘em out.
