Even though the father had a lengthy criminal record, there was nothing the county could have done to protect a little boy whose father bit out his eyes, the head of Kern County Department of Human Services said Tuesday morning.
DHS Director Pat Cheadle was preparing to brief the Board of Supervisors on what happened to 4-year-old Angelo Mendoza Jr.
Police said the boy’s father bit him on the face April 28. One eye was damaged beyond repair, police said, and the other was gone — it could not be found, and police believe the father ate it.
‘’My Daddy ate my eyes,’’ the boy told a detective.
Police arrested Angelo Mendez Sr., 34, who has a long criminal record. He has been charged in more than 20 cases and pleaded no contest three years ago to child endangerment.
