Sissies, all of you. I walked into the howling wind ten miles both ways up the lava hill while carrying my little brother on my back so that he could get the free lunch at school. And I was a GIRL.

\You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

My hill was sand, try that on a bicycle with a huge book bag on your back and I am a girl too. I went to school so long ago we didn't have free lunches we didn't even have a cafeteria.
