We also have a log splitter. Our son is using it this week at his job, splitting wood for one of their clients. When we first got it many years ago, the kids were still pretty young. I think our oldest son was in 2nd grade. He was out with my husband watching dad split wood and standing back away from the splitter. All of a sudden there was a loud bang as a piece of wood shot out from the splitter and hit our son right in the mouth. It chewed up his mouth and knocked out a couple of teeth. We had to take him to the emergency room and then to a dentist’s office where they pulled several of his baby teeth and reattached his one adult tooth which had come loose. It was a very scary, freak accident. Hubby said the piece of wood had a hard knot in it that the splitter was having a tough time going through and a piece of the wood cracked off. That son, to this day, won’t split wood or go near it.

Ouch! I don’t blame your son for staying away from log splitters after an event like that. Poor kid.

I’ve seen them hit a knot as well, the large bang they make is pretty loud. I haven’t had one fly though. Yet.

Ah, yes, those stubborn knots. I have learned to recognize the ominous sound of our splitter when it hits one, most of the time, but hubby is an old pro and if I hear him shout, “stand back," I get WAY back as those chunks can really fly.
Cottonball, I smiled when I read of your calculations of cordage. I have amused myself for years while stacking wood with various calculations. 8x4x4=128, then I calculate the size of my woodshed, pile, row or where ever I am stacking and divide by 128 to see how many cords I have in that area. Mindless activity to pass the time. Had a wonderful teacher in my one room schoolhouse who taught us many shortcuts to do math in your head.

Celebrating 61 years of marital bliss (LOL) today. Two strong-willed personalities sure put a damper on marital bliss but he is still my very best friend, so I guess we have done well.
