I think that you’re ignoring the fact that the soil is not smooth at the shadow side of the object.
There appears to be some material that was displaced by impact. Kind of a mini-crater around it.

In the first pic, the shadows inside the craters are at the north-northeast edge of the craters, indicating sun would be shining from the north-northeast. The obelisk shadow should be cast to the south-southwest.
