"Family Ties" Shocker: Meredith Baxter says "I'm a lesbian mom"

Alex P. Keaton's TV mom on "Family Ties" is gay.

That's what actress Meredith Baxter told this week's People magazine.

"I'm a lesbian mom," Baxter, who played Elyse Keaton on the popular 1980s sitcom, told the magazine. "I feel like I'm being honest for the first time."

Baxter, 62, said she started dating women several years ago, but before that, being gay "had never crossed my mind."

Baxter said three failed marriages led to several difficult years in her life.

"I was never comfortable with myself," she said. "That doesn't mean I was questioning."

The actress says she is in a long-term relatioship with contractor Nancy Locke, and that her five kids all know, and support her.

I would disagree with you. Most women of 62 who have not had plastic surgery do not look hat good. I have to hand it to her that she hasn't had anything done--but on the other hand, lesbians rarely feel any need to have cosmetic surgery done.

I think she felt she had to come out as the Enquirer reported she was on a lesbian cruise with a woman, While straight women go on these cruises too, it is rare, sez the Enq.

Kelly Preston was also on this cruise and was flirting and flaunting but they said Meredith and her companion were quiet and dignified and kept to themselves.

My whole point is that one's sex life should be personal--but then, I'm way behind the times. I don't go to movies and I don't watch TV.
