She was never attracted to women, but has three failed marriages to men ... so, why not give it a shot? Sometimes bad relationships can scar a person, and drive them into behaviors in which they would not normally participate.

In a more extreme example ... Andrea Dworkin. She was beaten, raped, prostituted, etc. throughout the early stages of her life. Virtually ALL of her male relationships were with men (father, boyfriends, husbands, johns) that were complete scum. Her mind became warped — and she became a rabid man-hating lesbian radical feminist.

This is likely just another example of that — though to a lesser degree. Baxter was poorly treated by several men (at least in her opinion), and began preferring women.
