while the First Family intended to find a local church to attend when they moved to Washington, concerns about crowds and displacing regular worshippers has prevented them from finding a new religious home during their first year here.

What a crock. President Bush didn't seem to have that problem. Nor any other past president that I can recall.

Ronald Reagan did not attend church outside of the WH after the assassination attempt. BUT, he and Nancy invited pastors to conduct private services INSIDE the WH. Reagan was criticized for that, but he said that he did not want to disrupt the church experience for other parishioners attending.

OTOH, George W. Bush attended church frequently and quietly -- even slipping into daily services at a church near the WH.

As I recall, Presidential church attendance has been spotty in recent decades. President Bush (the most recent one) never became a member of any local church, infrequently attended St. John's, but did worship more often at the Camp David chapel. Nixon wouldn't go out to church, instead holding services at the White House (and got some criticism for that). Reagan very rarely went out to church, instead preferring services at home, too, and received some criticism for that, too. Clinton started going to church regularly after his sex scandals. Jimmy Carter attended church fairly regularly.

My guess is that if they found a church they felt comfortable in, the press would have to check it out, and find another Jeremiah-Wright-type preacher denouncing the United States.

This whole “don’t go to church” is an interesting side-show. I remember two years ago this was my biggest concern about Fred Thompson, who also professed to be a Christian but also said he didn’t attend services.
