LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech has fired football coach Mike Leach.

The school handed a termination letter to Leach's attorney, Ted Liggett, on Wednesday just before the two sides were to appear in a Lubbock, Texas, courtroom for a hearing on the coach's suspension.

Liggett says the letter says Leach is "terminated with cause effective immediately."

YOu are dead wrong - Leach has never had any investigations of the Tech program. No sanctions, no problems with NCAA rules - he has not been on the hot seat in any capacity.

If you think this is so stupid, why even bother to post? Football brings money to a school - expansion - and Texas Tech University has benefitted from the increased exposure this coach and this team has provided... look at the campus - look across the street from the campus at the new hotel, new shopping, new apartments and condos, houses.... that didn’t happen because folks want to live in Lubbock Texas - it happened because kids wanted to come to Texas Tech.... grow up.

Pissing off people is not being on the hot seat. Being on the hot seat on college football is due to a bad record or something done to a player.

did you happen to watch that game? Coach was dead on..... and his complaint is not the same thing as him being on the hot seat for years. Quite an exaggeration. He spoke out saying the officiating sucked - and he was fined - period

You do realize that almost every coach rails against bad officials, right? Do you even watch football?

Yet you said Leach has been on the hot seat.

Leach has been on the hot seat because he's an unapologetic, un-pc rogue who wasn't liked by the Tech intelligencia.

Those were your words used to indicate the ‘hot seat’ was a farce.

That's it? He got fined for criticizing some officials? Then I suppose Urban Meyer deserves to be fired too. In fact most coaches get cautioned or fined for criticizing officials at some point.

I don't consider that to be a serious stain on ANY coach's record. You might. I don't.

I bet Leach ends up being the next coach at Florida State.

Does your coach just roll over like a whipped puppy? I was referring to allegations with players being paid, or taking bribes or being paid for jobs not done - Tech hasn’t had those sort of issues and I say again Coach has not been on the hot seat - he one time complained and was fined - it was paid and it was over. His job wasn’t at issue - you are the one with the problem here.

ESPN should fire James: That station is a joke, SportCenter used to be my favorite show when it was about sports highlights, not making up news.

Hope coach sues and wins Big,

Florida should get him as offensive coordinator next year.

I like it! That would sure spice up the annual Gator-Seminole game. Lately it's been pretty lackluster.

I read that Kentucky be interested, too. That's a tougher gig in terms of recruiting, but it would keep Leach's intricate and unusual offensive sets showcased on a big stage.

I'm posting precisely because it is a stupid, foolish controversy. Claiming the new hotel, shopping, etc. is the result of “this coach and this team” is fanciful.

I'm hoping kids are smart enough to go to Tech for the school and not because of the football team. Picking a college because of the football team is downright hair-brained. I would be fearful of hiring someone who went to a school for that reason - assuming they could actually graduate with any kind of meaningful degree.

But I forgot...college is all about football...and supporting the team is a validation of our self worth.

My bad. Please forgive me. I am truly sorry. For without football there there would be no college and life itself would be meaningless.

I shall do my utmost to meet your expectations in the future.

My dear, get a grip. It's only football.

If this situation turns out to be a railroading of the coach, the whole dynamic probably started when the son was a little kid. Dad may have been one of those insufferable “stage” dads who made life miserable for any coach or ref who didn’t give sonny boy his due in every situation. We’ve all seen overbearing parents who think that EVERYONE is against their poor wittle baby. These are the Little League dads who stroke out if their little darling isn’t the next Willie Mays, or if their peewee soccer player is not touted as the next Pele.

The James family moved from Plano (a large 5A school) to Celina (a smaller 3A school) so Adam could be a starter - he couldn't make it against the big boys.

Celina is a football factory. Yeah, it's 3A, but when I photographed them in 2005, when they were 2A, they had 80 kids suited up on the sidelines (some of the 2A schools in Texas only have 190 to 200 students, total, in all four grades.) GA Moore, who built the Celina powerhouse went to Pilot Point, and in a few years had to resign over alleged recruitment of players. Allegations were that parents of players were promised jobs if they'd move into the district. A lot of the football glitterati in the Metroplex collect at Celina, and they have a lot of political clout.
