The first minor league hockey game I attended had a big fight in it. The redneck granny next to me held her three year old grandkid above her head so he could get a better view of that fight. Ahh, memories.

I prefer the hockey of today, where skilled players vastly outnumber the goons.Once upon a time, TV Guide introduced the sports section of the annual season preview edition thus: "Good news for fight fans---the NHL is back."
That was like a Rocky movie.
I'm bored to tears with the style of hockey played today in North America. Nothing but neutral zone trap with mostly 2-1 and 3-2 type games. It's kind of like soccer.
I still remember a game between the Boston Bruins and California Golden Seals back in 1974 or 1975. The Bruins were behind 6-2 going into the third period and ended up winning the game 7-6. Scores of 10-2, 8-6 and 11-7 were fairly common. Games were wide open with tons of fights. I remember when Stan Jonathon (of the Bruins) destroyed one of the opposing players in a fight and then skated to the opponents bench and dared all of them (including the coach) to come out and fight. Those were the days!
Bettman saved the greedy owners and players from themselves, imo.
Expansion wasn’t created by Bettman - in his bloodless corporate way, he has tried to make it work. I give him credit for the salary cap and resulting better competitive atmosphere, and also for the comprehensive rule changes that sped the game up.
I would like to see a couple or three of the weaker US franchises move to Canada but it’s not my money on the line, and this is not a perfect world.

Thank you for reminding me of how brutally boring hockey was at that time. I spared myself several seasons of that “glory days 11-7” dreck by not watching it from one year to the next. Schultz, Jonathan, and the rest of the thugs were a savage freak show promoted by cynical owners.
Thank you Wayne Gretzky for bringing talent instead of thuggery to center ice!

Anyone who has ever played hockey can testify as to how exhausting it is to trade punches like that for even 20-30 seconds on skates.
Professional hockey has the same flavor as professional wrestling. IMHO It is rigged, just like pro wresting is now.
The "pure fan" knows hockey and enjoys it for what it is. The average "Joe Sixpack" fan just watches Pro Hockey for the fights. Don't believe me? Ask 100 people you know. I bet you more than 90 of 'em will say the best part of Hockey "is the fights!"
The team owners KNOW this and recruit kids who will "pump up the sagging sales" of seats with fights.
Fights are what attacts the average fan. Sickening, IMHO, but true.
OTOH, watch a College hockey game. MUCH more technical hockey, and no fights!
Of course, no big crowds/public interest either...Hmmm, I wonder why?
