It is a warning for couch potatoes everywhere relaxing in front of the television can shorten your life.
Each hour spent vegging out in front of television increases the risk of early death by up to 18 per cent, according to researchers from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne.
Even healthy people who exercise increase the chances of premature death from heart disease by 18 per cent for each hour spent in front of television. They have a 9 percent increased risk of cancer and an 11 per cent increased risk of death from all causes, claims the Australian and French team, whose findings are reported today in Circulation, the journal of the American Heart Association.

Actually, it should read “Sitting on your ever-widening can for hours at a time can shorten your life.” It doesn’t really matter if the TV is on or off, does it? I mean, you could be sitting looking at a painting. Or a broken TV.
But the hours in front of the computer don’t count. Right? Tell me that they don’t count!
From a physical body point of view, it doesn’t matter if it’s tv watching or reading a book.
From a brain point of view, your brain will shrink. You’re better off listening to radio or reading, as your mind is far more engaged when you have to use your imagination to visualize and follow along and remember things that you can’t see in front of you.
It really should be for every hour that you’re loafing, stuffing yourself and being mindlessly entertained,....
Or watching the paint dry!!! LOL!
No, it just seems shorter. You sit down, turn the TV on, blink, and then say to yourself: “How could three hours possibly have passed by already?”
In fact, the TV’s electronics may in fact be setting up a localized temporal distortion.
Regardless, you won’t get those three hours back. Sorry.
18% seems a little bit high to me.
anyway, it’s not how long you live, it’s how much you’ve lived in the time alloted you (and whether you voted Dhimm, or not) that counts.
Each hour? What an absurdly written statistic. After 12 hours of NFL playoff games last weekend, it's only a matter of minutes before half of America keels over.
After I get some of that Federal Grant money like they give to Michael Mann at Pitt, I intend to show that Sun/Moon Cycles, which last 24 hours, shortens your life on a 1 to 1 basis.
I watch television on the treadmill, does that count?
>> Each hour spent vegging out in front of television increases the risk of early death by up to 18 per cent.
That can’t be accurate.
Assuming the risk of early death is 10% (random number for simplicity)...
0 hours — 10%
1 hour — 11.8%
2 hours — 13.9%
3 hours — 16.4%
.
.
.
13 hours — 85.9%
... after that (14 hours of tv watching), you’re guaranteed an early death (assuming an 18% increase per hour). That’s ridiculous.

Oh crap! According to this I died 10 years ago!
18% for every hour? Then in about 6 hours we’d be dead. I’m skeptical.
For people who think the statistic is exaggerated because I started at 10% ...
— If there is a 1% risk of “early death”, you’re looking at an 87% risk of early death after 27-hours of TV (over 100% after 28 hours).
— If there is a .1% risk of early death, you’re looking at an 88% risk of early death after 41-hours of TV (over 100% after 42-hours).
— If there is a .001% risk of early death, you’re looking at an 89% risk after 57-hours of TV (over 100% after 58 hours).
What a retarded statistic.

I guess they’ll take the tellys out of the hospital rooms now.
