Two bitter rivals, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, fought over how this nation would be led. Adams and his Federalist Party lashed out at printing presses through thugs and the Sedition Act. Jefferson used the Sedition Act to destroy the Federalist Party. [I should bring some of that history here.]

On the Fourth of July — the Independence Day of 1826 — last words of John Adams: “Thomas Jefferson survives.”

On that same day, within hours, Thomas Jefferson also passed away.

Coincidence?

Urg —
Jefferson used the Sedition Act as AN ISSUE to destroy the Federalist Party.

Also, “Adams always proclaimed that, though Jefferson was 7 years younger than himself: “I will out live Jefferson.”

Oh - yes - please do bring some of that history here! So interesting!

Yes I knew that Jefferson and John Adams died on the same exact fourth of July! Well, yes, one of those “God” coincidences, I think...

Thanks for reminding me of that.

Just wonderful that Adams and Jefferson both passed away on the very same day. July 4th was repeatedly an important date in our history, even pre-Revolution.

This happens in family histories also, where the same date recurs through the generations. It has in mine.

I recently picked up a copy of Our Sacred Honor: The Stories, Letters, Songs, Poems, Speeches, and Hymns that Gave Birth to Our Nation by William J. Bennet, and have been browsing through that.
