Word For The Day, Thursday, March 25, 2010 - solecism
dictionaries ad nauseum, internet | 25 March 2010 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

solecism \SOL-uh-siz-uhm\, noun
1. A nonstandard usage or grammatical construction; also, a minor blunder in speech.
2. A breach of good manners or etiquette.
3. Any inconsistency, mistake, or impropriety.

Example sentences:
An accurate report of anything that has ever been said in any parliament would be blather, solecism, verbiage and nonsense.
-- "Hansard of the Highlands", Times (London), February 17, 2001

Her English is good, apart from a few stubborn idiosyncrasies of preposition and tense, but these are music to me, sung solecisms -- how else to describe "I am already loving you," her first declaration of feeling for me, now two years old?
-- Ronan Bennett, The Catastrophist

In those days smoking in the streets was an unpardonable solecism.
-- Edmund Yates, Recollections

. . .another of her fabrications or flat-footed solecisms or, at any rate, a simple indication of the boundless ineptitude with which she manages Leonardo's affairs.
-- R.M. Berry, Leonardo's Horse

Etymology:
Solecism comes from Latin soloecismus, from Greek soloikizein, "to speak incorrectly," from soloikos, "speaking incorrectly," literally, "an inhabitant of Soloi," a city in ancient Cilicia where a dialect regarded as substandard was spoken.

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

doesn't it feel like the country is hanging by a slender thread, ready to plunge into open violence at any time?

Back from the wet woods-we had a hell of a thunderstorm here just after midnight-

You’ve really got to hand it
To Obama and his mafia bunch-
They’ve tried to screw the people
And be done in time for lunch

Let’s be thankful to Joe Biden-
With his F-bomb and lack of guile
His inappropriate solecism showed
The ‘rats in their usual style-

They thumb their noses at voters-
We’re beneath them, after all
And with that mindset exposed now
Come November they’ll take the fall

I’m going to help one of my neighbors put together some decorations for the kids’ Easter party and egg hunt at the community center next Saturday-back later...

Mr. Spanky must be out there somewhere-if he were to come visit the class, maybe I could get rid of this strange urge I woke up with this morning to write soulful LOVE POETRY-something I haven’t put a pen or keyboard to in more years than I can count. I must go to my neighbor’s house now-

quicker to just get them from india.

When my mother first learned she had breast cancer (almost 30 years ago), the oncologist who did the surgery to remove one breast and most of her lymph nodes was of middle-eastern origin. Keep in mind this was in the early Reagan years, fresh from the Carter debacle and our experience of a group of radical pissants in Iran holding 400 American citizens hostage for over a year. My mother asked the oncologist where he was from, and he replied "Persia". He probably had no idea that she knew full well that Persia was the ancient name of the land comprising Iran and Iraq today.

He may have been a supporter of the Shah? our contractor, who does any work on our house, is Persian, came over before the Revolution. He’s a great guy, VERY pro-america. i was fascinated by his stories of going back for the first time this past summer. he was PETRIFIED that he was going to be thrown into the slammer over there.

You McCainiac you....

McCainiac, one who supports the guy who wants to ban vitamin supplements and throw American citizens in jail without Fourth Amendment protections as "enemy belligerents".

And that's just this year.

And I'm still waiting for him to hire me to pick lettuce for 50 dollars an hour.

I still can't believe I had to vote for that clown last November

I'm sure he was. Later, during another visit as my mother chatted with him and let him know that she knew Persia=Iran, they talked about the situation over there and he identified with the previous government of Iran and his opposition to the Khomeini regime. He was a good surgeon, and a good oncologist.

I am convinced that my mother's decision at that time to forego any radiation or chemotherapy (based on the doctor's prognosis after her surgery) was a key factor in the effectiveness of the hormone therapies she used when the cancer returned 10 years ago. Hormone therapy (including a secondary hormone that was jumpstarted with a very brief chemo regimen after the first hormone therapy stopped being effective) kept the cancer contained from further spread for several years, which gave her additional time to enjoy life with my dad and watching her grandkids grow.

Having McCain deliver the litany of complaints with this bill was a huge mistake and easy to see. Why the party is still beholden to him after how poorly he performed and how he abandoned conservative principles is beyond me. It is so easy for them to blow him off as Mr. Sour Grapes. Cantor would have been an imminently better choice.

and Dingell claims his “control the people” line was a solecism.

More like a freudian slip.

I hope you remember when the Daschle/McCain summit happened about nine years ago, Cyber and I were at McCain’s sandy street protesting in better than 100 degrees.

I asked Dittomom how you keep your makeup on in the wind, sand and heat. She told me “You don’t wear it.” LOL! That’s Arizona’s desert for you. Dittomom has the photos. We’ve talked to her, but she hasn’t posted for a while.

Then we all tried to get him out of office. A lot of people around here don’t want change. FAIL. EPIC FAIL. Dittomom, Cyber and I and a lot of other people put in many hours to get that jerk out of office. He has sent us envelopes for fund raising money. My arse!

About a half hour ago, Megyn Kelly was talking about wild horses running through the streets of New York. Rolling Stones wrote (I think — can’t find it) a song about wild horses, and then I have Susan Boyle’s song she sung about Wild Horses. This is definitely No. 1 on your solecism WFTD. Many, many errors in punctuation:

Childhood living is easy to do
The things you wanted I bought them for you
Graceless lady you know who I am
You know I cant let you slide through my hands

Wild horses couldnt drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldnt drag me away

I watched you suffer a dull aching pain
Now you decided to show me the same
No sweeping exits or offstage lines
Could make me feel bitter or treat you unkind

Wild horses couldnt drag me away
Wild, wild horses, couldnt drag me away

I know I dreamed you a sin and a lie
I have my freedom but I dont have much time
Faith has been broken, tears must be cried
Lets do some living after we die

Wild horses couldnt drag me away
Wild, wild horses, well ride them some day

Wild horses couldnt drag me away
Wild, wild horses, well ride them some day
