I went into Aunt Butchie’s (Bay Ridge) to buy a cake, and every single one of the workers behind the counter were Mexican.

I asked the owner later why there were no italian kids working there, as there used to be, and she said kids don’t want to work anymore...they just want to watch TV or surf the internet.

It was sad to see.

That's because there hasn't been a wave of Italian immigration since the mid 1960s. Without additional immigrants to replenish, ethnic enclaves die. That's a m-F'in fact of life. Besides, even the new immigrants (whatever their ethnicity) don't stay in a neighborhood for very long, and multigenerational neighborhoods are a thing of the past.

BTW: It doesn't matter whether you order Italian, French, or Vietnamese in NYC: You will have Mexicans or Ecuadorians in the kitchen.
