Is this just a big sparrow, or a different bird? (vanity)
my backyard in central california | march 30, 2010 | Perky (that's me)

Posted on 03/30/2010 2:00:16 PM PDT by PERKY2004

One of our backyard bird feeders (central California) has been very popular today with what looks to me like a giant sparrow, but I was wondering if anyone could tell me for certain? He's about 4-5 times the size of the goldfinches and housefinches that usually hang out on the feeder; in fact, he's about the size of the mourning doves we also get. Anyway, I snapped a few photos before he fluttered off.

Thanks for your assistance in identifying this bird. CHIRP!

It’s what we’ve always called them ... ever since I can remember. Part of the Jay family of birds ... most commonly known here as camp robbers ....

No such thing as a Cooper Jay. Maybe you mean a magpie or a stellar jay or a scrub jay.

Cooper’s hawk is totally different. I think you have been mixing metsphors too long ;)

Could be but probably more like a Mommy Mocking bird about to hatch her brood. Think?

Is that Robert Duvall? Let me know. Duvall with hair. I really like him as an actor.

I guess it’s from what part of the states you’re from ... same bird, different name ... there has to be the correct Audubon name for them ... so I guess there’s the nickname we give them too ...

I would say mockingbird by the shape of the tale, but the coloring isn’t right.

Totally different color than a sparrow and looks like a mockingbird.

"Looks like a mocking bird to me. Could be wrong, tho."

My first impression, too. Phoebe? Flycatcher?

Here is a good web page for just this kind of thing:

whatbird.com

here is the lisitng for Northern Mockingbird:

http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/158/_/Northern_Mockingbird.aspx

It really does help with some hard to identify birds.

I just watched that again the other night, it was pretty good, starring FBI man James Arness and Sheriff James Whitmore.
