All our usual Triple Crown chat seems to have evaporated. Today is the Second Leg of the TC. A field of 12 goes postward at Pimlico today for the Preakness Stakes.

OF COURSE, if our goal is to make money, we've got to eliminate at least ONE favorite from Win and Place. There is ONLY realy money to be made in superfecta bets for this race. Unfortunately, like the Derby, these superfectas will be ONE DOLLAR MINIMUM, and not 10 and 20 and 50 cent bets also, like they've been in the past. WE CAN ELIMINATE FROM SUPERFECTA CONTENTION only the following horses: #2, #4, #5, #11. Here's how the race could unfold:

As I see it , there are only TWO speed horses in this race and they are JACKSON BEND and CARACORTADO. They will both be at least 10-1. BOTH these horses are ones that could keep SUPERSAVER from ever getting his patented railsaving trip, and winning that way. I liked Jackson Bend WAYY back, and his Derby performance was likely due to the slop. He is as good as any in here. A Having said that, the "offical" pick among knowledgable handicappers will likely be Lookin at Lucky. AT LEAST as good a horse as SUPERSAVER. A good Super bet, in multiples of $1, would be 7,8 with 7,8 with 6,9 with 6,9. I might bet five $1 exacta boxes of Jackson Bend and Caracortado. That should be worth at least $500. I will have bets also that will include DUBLIN, who could surprise, and Paddy O'Prado in all four superfecta positions.

Thanks... Nice summary.

I believe.. Looking at Lucky is a SUPER horse that’s been riden by a crappy jockey. Gomez LET Borel cut him off at the rail in the Derby...

I also like Jackson Bend... those two will be on top of all my bets.

Should be a nice race.

Whatever happens todays though... BET ICE BOX in the Belmont.

I only pay attention to the Belmont, and only if the same horse or rider won the Derby and the Preakness. Horse racing just isn’t that interesting, though I’d like to see the Crown won again.

We’re going to a sports bar with some friends to watch the race on a REALLY BIG screen. We live not too far from Baltimore and I do love me some Preakness action - just not up close and personal.

Between ourselves, we are each putting down $2.00 on a horse - I’ve picked Lookin at Lucky. Don’t know why - I just like the looks of the horse.

I am a hopelessly ignorant neophyte at betting - I’m just going to throw two bucks on the table, drink a Natty Boh, and enjoy watching the ponies run. Of course, pronouncing the word “ponies” with a suitable Balmer accent...

That’s how I’m going to enjoy the race. Good luck to all and may your horse emerge victorious (as long as it’s Lookin at Lucky...)

I used to be intrested in the triple crown until Big Brown — I knew watching the Derby that the horse had to be on steroids — and then the terrible tragedy of the mare going down on the track — and then I was proved right when he came in last in the Belmont —
and after that I never watched again because it’s all fixed.

I went to Pimlico two years ago, and had a great time. Being the “middle child” it doesn’t get the attention that the Derby or Belmont get (the latter of which has the advantage of occurring in the NYC metro area).

Calvin Borel on Super Saver. The Preakness being half a furlong shorter than the Derby, should be just what the doctor ordered for Super Saver. If Borel can get Super Saver in close to the rail by the 3/4 pole it might be goodnight Irene for the rest of the field.

Eight Belles was a Filly, not a Mare.

But.. yea, it was a horrible event. I have an awesome photo of Big Brown and Eight Belles crossing the finish line. It breaks my heart every time I look at it.. since, I know... it was the last 15 minutes of her life.

Still though... these horses are spectacular. And, they very obviously LOVE what they’re doing.

I forget its name, but the horse that ran second in the KY Derby was coming on strong at the end. Given more distance that horse will probably win his next race. Is it running in the Preakness?

The Preakness tends to be the red-headed step-kid of the Triple Crown. People pay attention to the Derby because its the most notable ... and they pay attention to the Stakes if the same horse won the Derby and the Preakness.

Thank you!

If the Derbyu was his last race, he should win the Belmont if they enter him.
