I'll stipulate that I'm a bike rider and run red lights when it is "safe" for me.

However, this does appear to be an accident. It's much safer to ride on the sidewalks in the city and take one's chances against the pedestrians, vs. heavy vehicles made of steel.

This is not an accident. By Florida law, the bus must give the cyclist 3 feet clearance when passing. A trained bus driver knows this.

Riding a bicycle on the sidewalk is illegal. It is also dangerous because you can get killed by someone backing out of a driveway. Drivers don’t expect other vehicles to be on the sidewalk. Bikes belong in the street.

It’s actually at least twice as dangerous to ride on the sidewalk, than on the street. (Twice again as dangerous to ride against traffic, on the sidewalk.)

Unless you’re going very slow (walking speed) — stick to the street.

BTW, around here it’s illegal to ride on sidewalks, or across crosswalks. If that’s the case where you ride, you could be asking for some hefty fines.

It's not much safer for the pedestrians though. Cycles vs. buses and cars-the cyclist loses. Cycles vs. pedestrians-the pedestrian loses. By the way, as a pedestrian, I came within inches of being hit by an a*****e on a bike who, like you, ran a red light thinking it was "safe" for him. I could have ended up in the morgue like the guy in the linked article.
