My wife and I really liked an NBC show called
Life . It only ran for two seasons, but was quite interesting. It's about a cop who is sent to prison for several years for murdering a family. He is cleared of the murder via DNA evidence and set free, and given a cash settlement that makes him a multimillionaire. While in prison, he read a book on zen and used that to keep his sanity (as an ex-cop he was routinely beaten while in prison).
He returns to the force and while working on a new case every week (with a zen viewpoint), he continues to try to find out who the real murderer is. The cop is played by Damien Lewis, who played Lt. Winters in Band of Brothers.
I am watching LIFE now (netflix) and am so sorry it did not last longer than 2 seasons.
Others from Netflix I have enjoyed:
MONK (suitable for older teens and adults and very funny and fun)
DEXTER-definitely not suitable for normal folks, lol, but I loved the books and the series.
The CLOSER, Mad Men and the Tudors-all currently running but DVDs of earlier seasons available.
