Can DUI affect next job application
moleman

Posted on 06/13/2010 10:59:12 AM PDT by Moleman

Hello all, Friday I was "downsized" from my position in Sales for an automotive supplier. I have a few leads that I feel I am well qualified for. My concern is a ercent drinking and driving conviction. Was a first time offense but still an offense. It was pleaded down to a four point ticket. What is your opinion of having a drinking convicion on your record when applying for medium level Managment positions?

Thanks

If they ask whether you have ever been convicted of a crime on the application then answer honestly and take your chances, if they don’t then do not offer the information. It will come up in a background check and you may or may not ever know why you didn’t get the job or you may be asked to explain the situation and given a chance to redeem yourself.

Good Luck

You actually corrected his post in quote like an editor??? OMG that is too damn funny...

I think it was a very helpful gesture. Too many people don't know how to write, punctuate, and spell nowadays. Spell-check programs don't catch everything. If this poster makes so many mistakes in a post he might well allow a few mistakes to slip by in his resume too. So just pointing out some common errors could help improve his presentation and get him an interview.

Of course, the morons that vote democrat and put a bunch of commies in charge of Congress and the WH get off scot free.

Seems to me they are just as dangerous and irresponsible, and I wouldn't hire any of them either.

Hopefully you’ve come to your senses and stopped drinking then getting behind the wheel.

Oh I have learned my lesson. Will never do that again. Thank goodness no one was hurt

It shows as OWVI not DUI (still not an admirable thing though)

as someone who hires, if i found out

Do you hire folks who don't know how to capitalize properly?

it seemed you were still in denial about your drinking, i wouldnt hire.

Getting a DUI/DWI has WHAT to do with denial?

if you were up front and talked about how you had stopped drinking, got sober, been to AA or something like that, it would be a plus.

Drinking is legal. AA is gay. The first word of a sentence starts with a capital letter.

in case you dont know, if you have a DUI, you, be definition, have “a drinking problem”. if you dont know that, then you got some work to do.

"Be" definition? Whose definition? Yours? You, who hire people, but write like an eight year old?

If you lie about it, you may be fired the moment they find out. I’ve seen men and women walked out the door months after they started the job because “the report” finally got in. You might consider applying for jobs where this is a resume enhancer. Try the DNC. It will help even more if you havn’t paid your taxes.

This isnt a job interview...and when people start correcting other peoples use of syntax in snide manner that’s a bit over the top IMHO...

It reeks of elitism and is of little use on FR.

He asked about his DUI issue...he didnt ask how to write a resume.

No security clearance? That is bull. Do you know how many DWI and DUI’s pilots and others in the service have?

For god’s sake, it is a DUI and 95% of America knows that it could have happened to them the last time they left a party also.

Sheese.

You are correct.

A good many of our best Pilots in the Air Force, as an example, get DUI’s and DWI’s.

I have a close relative who is an HR Director. Most companies of any size will require you fill out the standard application as part of the hiring process. A pretty standard question is “have you ever been arrested?”. It is important that you answer honestly, since a background check will reveal that info, and it may come out later if they don’t check. I know of many cases where an employee is terminated later on the basis of lying on the application, some of whom were let go very reluctantly because they were good employees, but policy is usually followed strictly because it can be used against you in a discrimination case.

Correct..the idea that ANYONE who has ever had a DUI is automaticly an achoholic is laughable and frankly is been pushed by social groups like MADD who seek to control all aspects of ones life...nanny staters...

We have to sit through this crap at work every once and a while...

The last defintion put up to a room full of grown men with a straight face:

“If you drink more than one beer at a sitting...or more than once a week...you have a drinking problem”

She was serious...

The bitch was almost laughed out of the room and became very indignant for the rest of the “education hour”

She got really red faced when the “class” was over and I said loudly as we filed out....”ok boys...first round at the bar is on me”

If looks could kill....

That alone was worth sitting through her bullshit.

And yes a few of us went and had a couple beers...I even drove home...

Oh the horror...

Employment applications usually ask if you have been arrested, then specifics are asked about the circumstances and disposition.

There are a lot of people on FR who have been giving each other pointers about finding jobs. It’s not elitist to point out that someone is making mistakes that can prevent him from getting an interview. I appreciate it when someone on this board makes suggestions about errors I might be making in the job-search process, and there’s nothing that suggests this poster was being anything other than helpful. Do you realize how many resumes are simply thrown in the trash because of elementary mistakes in spelling, punctuation, and grammar? Ask any hiring manager or job coach and he’ll tell you that incorrectly-spelled applications and resumes go straight in the trash.

You could take offense if these corrections were directed toward you, but clearly the original poster hasn’t complained.

Do people applying for mid-level management positions generally have to fill out application forms? I wouldn't think so!

You are wrong. Unless it's a smaller employer, all applicants are usually required to fill out the standard application

If it was a DUI conviction, it is not a crime, it is a violation.

It is a crime. They don't take you off in handcuffs for violation of the motor vehicle codes.

He is very lucky and I have heard of a few others bouncing back after DUIs and worse.

Not really. He can get (and keep) a security clearance based upon what was written here. Just some guy going through life, has an alcoholic-related incident, will be in the equation but on itself, no, not a sole dis-qualifier.

Now . . .if he does NOT reveal the offense on his SF-86, that would be another matter. But we are talking a commercial job working auto-parts. No big deal as it doesn't need to be mentioned unless driving in the new job is required. If not driving, no mention, and if they bring it up, as long as he shows contrition and remorse and an effort to atone (pay the fines, perhaps volunteer to speak against drink-driving, etc. . .), he will be okay.
