I had a C&R for a long time, and I have a lot of experience cleaning the Cosmoline off these rifles. The best method that I found was to heat up the metal parts of the rifle. Disassemble the rifle completely. Then sit the disassembled rifle out in the hot sun. The sun will heat up the cosmoline and turn it into more of a liquid rather than a greasy substance. It is then much easy to get off the rifle with standard solvents. (Kerosene works too.) Some people go as far as putting the cosmoline soaked rifles in ovens. I wouldn’t do that. The sun works just fine.

I used to have to degrease 30-50 rifles per shipment a month. My usual first stop was a coin operated carwash.

That may be overkill for cleaning a single weapon, but for cleanine weapons of Eastern European origin [Omnipol] that were preserve-packaged in the truly horrible fish oil-based grease they used, it was a good procedure. The oil had frequently turned rancid in shipment, and my cats loved me.

A word of warning: many carwashes use salt as awater softener additive to assist sudsing, and some home water softeners use salt as well. If this is the case in your area, rinse afterward with non-treated water, [and ideally, non-chlorinated] such as a gallon of distilled water from the grocery or battery shop.

And John Wayne's Blood Alley, which describes other procedures for obtaining a collectable Mosin-Nagant rifle.

Steampunk fantasy ‘technology’ is really a work of art. There is a reason why all my watches (I collect timepieces) are skeleton mechanicals. Seeing all those gears and what not is just a joy.
