Pretty much everyone in our family is like you.
I just have a little extra loot and don’t see the difference.
I mean if a hollow point is suppose to do more damage and based on my experience, I believe they will, why not shoot that for self defense.
Expensive for range shooting but even I make concession of economics and shoot the inexpensive Winchesters

OK except if you have an accidental discharge (yeah I know never ever should happen, but does) and you hit yourself!
I cringe at the thought of hitting myself with a hollow point!
