XP and Network problem

I installed a new harddrive and new XP pro on my sons computer today. All is fine except it cannot access the internet.

When I try to create a network, it says it cannot find network adaptors and devices.

It is a new installation, any ideas?

I have a related problem and all suggestions are welcomed.

Last week during a storm, my ethernet connection died. The PC (XP) was OK in all aspects except I lost my ethernet connection.

I purchased a new PCI board, installed and the Device Manager recognizes the device; however I still cannot access the internet and the YELLOW warning sign is imposed on the device manager and indicates it “CANNOT BR STARTED”

I have uninstalled and reinstalled as well as downloading current driver.

Using my netbook so any suggestions are welcomed - thanks y’all!

Do other computers work on your router? Netbook on that same router? If so - then the motherboard PCI bus may damaged - try several PCI slots ...

Yes, the netbook I’m using now functions OK with same DSL modem.

When I connect the desktop with the new ethernet card installed, the Ethernet lights OK. Previously, the motherboard PCI Ethernet light was dead so the DSL modem is seeing the new PCI Ethernet card.

I’ll try installing on another PCI (only have 2 and 1 is being used)

How do I determine if motherboard is damaged? (All other functions of PC is OK)

You can have isolated electrical/electronic damage to just one PCI slot or the whole PCI bus.

You need to check to see what IP address is being assigned to your card by the DSL Modem. Go to Start - Run - then enter CMD (enter) - at the DOS prompt type - IPCONFIG /All (not case sensitive)... See what your IP address is and make sure it is in the same number grouping as the DSL Modem/Router such as 192.168.1.3 or whatever.

Some ‘high speed’ Internet services - even ones in use these days do not use automatic IP Address assignment as supplied by the DSL Modem’s DHCP services. You need to check with your ISP to make sure -— perhaps they still use an ‘old fashion’ Static IP addressing that you have to enter including DNS and Gateway addresses. Not likely but could be.

Oh - just thought - compare the IPCONFIG on your Netbook - to what you are getting on your PC. That will tell the tale pretty quickly.

I know just enough to be dangerous but was able to
1. RUN
2. Startup
3. Tools
4. IPConfig

Interesting results...

netbook shows addresses for:
- IP address
- Subnet mask
- Default gateway

The desktop shows nothing although “Ethernet light” is “ON” on the DSL modem

The desktop “troubleshooter” indicates the Ethernet card needs to be turned ON but my attempts with my limited PC knowledge has not been successful.

With the desktop showing NO addresses in the IPconfig, this appears to be the problem - yes?

One last question, the “Zonet ZEN3200” Ethernet card instructions stated in rare cases the PCI System BIOS requires changing by:

“Entering CMOS ETUP to enable PCI device and map INTA to an appropriate address.”

I’ve entered BIOS but did not see anything specific re” this topic.

While your desktop PCI netcard is electronically connected - lights on - it means little as you have seen.

Have you changed cables? Changed ports on the DSL Modem? Try both...

Your PCI netcard is not communicating with the DSL Modem - obviously as you lack of IP addresses. The DSL Modem issues the address to the PC. So - the driver is not working

As for the CMOS Setup - any number of computers would not have a BIOS that would have such a setting.

Have you removed the driver for the old card from the device manager?

Is the card fully inserted ‘seated’ in the PCI slot? Can’t be jack up on one end - Make sure you try different slots.

Removed the driver for the new card - reboot and see if you get a prompt to install it again. If not used Control Panel ‘Add Hardware’

Download a newer driver from the manufacturer if there is one - or just another copy of the one you have - maybe the driver is corrupted.

Well - I hope some of the things I suggest actually work... I currently support about 200 Dell PCs at a chain of banks... but in my life I have repaired, build anew from scratch, or reconstructed over 4000 PCs ... and thousands more of add on hardware items.

However, I am not really a ‘pocket protector’ “Techie” Nerd... I try to put things in common sense language and maybe it works...

Do you have a older model AT&T DSL?

I had one a few years back, and if I recall correctly, they sent me the DSL with a included pre-programmed card.

I wonder if that is not the issue. If so, you should be able to enter the sub net and the IP stuff manually into your Connection set up on XP.

Either that or ask the DSL provider for help.
