20 Worst-Paying College Degrees in 2010

Included among the 20 worst-paying college degrees are elementary education, special education, social work and child and family studies. That's the conclusion of the latest annual study of college degrees by Payscale, Inc. that compiled starting and mid-career pay for dozens of college majors.

Child and family studies earned the honors as the worst-paying college major. The average graduate earns a beginning salary of $29,500. What's equally discouraging is that the salary of someone in this field will barely budge after 15 years in the profession.

Food is another common theme for students who major in the worst-paying college degrees. Students who earn degrees in horticulture, dietetics and the culinary arts are more likely to end up struggling financially.

I wonder where plumbers, electricians, and other skilled trades would fall on that scale. I suspect they'd be fairly high, or at least they would have scored high before the illegals flooded the home-building market in some areas.

Illegals may be good for hanging sheet rock, but can't get their minds around wiring a building. I know a 37 year old electrician who made $220,000 last year (his wife has a big mouth). The immigrants that have taken the time to learn plumbing or electrical work tend to be legal and have been here awhile.

Yup... I’m 24, I’ve busted my @$$ working since I was 15 to pay for my own education. I have 30 credit hours remaining and will graduate with only about $15k in loans. I asked one girl what her major was and it was all I could do from laughing when she proudly said “urban development” hahahaha.

After Calc III and Diff Eq, don’t forget to add in Linear Algebra and Probability & Statistics.

Most of the ones who cant do the math in engineering end up as business majors. I will be tutoring the fall in math and working as the lab assistant for the chemistry department cant wait. As a side note the nursing department requires chemistry and its way harder than the engineering. This is due to the fact that they memorize every thing and don’t understand the math.

...a big screwup can cost $billions. It makes sense to hire the best. If you're an idiot, you will need to find another field, though.

Doh! I knew there was a catch!

There's a big conceptual leap between Linear Algebra and Differential Equations. A good teacher will warn--and prepare--his students.

I hope you are prepared to deal with a bunch of whiner babies who always relied on their parents to do everything for them. They will cry and complain when they can’t grasp a concept then blame it on you or the teacher.

That’s what he was doing by showing it early. He didn’t test us on it just showed the two most common applications.

Do EE’s still carry their slide rules hanging from their belt instead of crammed upside down in their back pockets in a proper manner? :)

CEC ‘64 NC State of the University of North Carolina At Raleigh. (We fought the Carolina Bastards to a stand still and you graduated from NC State University as a result rather than the abomination noted above)

Fully agree. NB that at the undergras level, there’s more than enough material to make probability and stats TWO classes, each one semester long.

The probability comes first, then the stats.

Regardless of what the stats on money say..students should pursue what interests them..and the success will follow. Too many people shun liberal arts degress in favor of "Business" because of these pressures to find a job that will pay the most--and end up in something they are not fit for. Not everyone is suited to work in the sciences or in corporate culture--and it may cause more problems than if they had chosen to not go that route in the long run.

Money and salary is not everything in life.

Without watching this or reading anything, I will guess the worst degrees are the ones not in business, engineering, or law schools.

There are very good reasons for English, Philosophy, Art, and degrees like them, but they are not going to make you money.
