1 Samuel 17:40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

Apparently the 'shepherd's bag' has been around at least since David and Goliath.

There are a few exceptions to the man rules. For example, if you defeat a 12' giant with a sling and route an invading army while still a teenager you can carry any kind of bag you want. It doesn't hurt when you are annointed by God to be the founder of the dynasty of the Savior.
