NEW YORK (Reuters Health) A new government study adds to the evidence that thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative until recently found in many vaccines, does not increase children's risk of autism.
It shows kids who had been exposed as babies to high levels of the preservative -- through vaccines they received or their mothers received while pregnant -- were no more likely to develop autism, including two distinct subtypes of the condition.
"This study should reassure parents about following the recommended immunization schedule," said Dr. Frank Destefano, director of the Immunization Safety Office at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, and the study's senior author.
Concerns about a link between vaccines and autism were first raised more than a decade ago by British physician Andrew Wakefield.
His report, based on 12 children, has since been discredited and was retracted earlier this year by the journal that published it. In the meantime, it sparked a fierce worldwide debate among scientists and a health scare that caused many parents to shy away from recommended vaccines like the one against measles, mumps and rubella.
Outbreaks of all three diseases followed.

Anyone believe any gubmint study?I sure as hell dont.
Nope.
**Anyone believe any gubmint study?I sure as hell dont.**
Can’t believe the “scientists” either as demonstrated by the global warming hoax. Just one more “tax” on society - the loss of faith in science, as it is practiced by activists.
Exactly
So mercury is ok now. Just like that. How convenient.
I’m surprised the Government survey didn’t find a link,,,so they could ‘take over’ the vaccine companies...
all members of Congress should publicly have their children and grandchildren vaccinated with mercury-based vaccines, just to show confidence in govt statements.
Odds are they do. Vaccinations for children are required before entering school. It is an extremely small minority of people who don't get vaccinated.
parents can ask for thimerosal-free vaccines
probably few do
“parents can ask for thimerosal-free vaccines
probably few do”
Virtually all children’s vaccines are mercury-free
Whats even more odd... is that it’s not just thimerosal...
My son was born very healthy, in fact perhaps too much so, he has a hyper-active immune system and one of the issue that often comes along with that is allergies. Nut, Egg, Milk (Two specific proteins).
Now what the drug manufacturers don’t publish well, is the fact that Peanut is often used as a transport mechanism, Egg is often used for culture. So... imagine a child who was given an injection into the blood supply of something that he is deathly allergic to? For us we have to carry an Epi-pen wherever we go.
Maybe it’s autism, maybe it’s something else I don’t know. But what I do know is it’s damn good we didn’t vaccinate though yes we prayed on it (One of those Bible huggers) and we decided to wait until age 2.
Now, knowing full well his allergies what does a parent do?
Extremely fortunate that we did wait, because we wouldn’t have known his allergens so early until he was tested.
I’m an engineer so I won’t play doctor, but I know it’s not just Thimerosal, there is more to it in my opinion. Mercury isn’t good, but putting allergens into the blood stream depending on a persons severity to allergies would be an interesting study... Just don’t sign up my children.
yes, since 2003
but not the flu vaccine and some others such as tetanus
gee, why - if there is no risk
like Gulf War syndrome- probably a combination of factors
Autism is an unnatural epidemic for sure, almost everyone I know has an autistic child or has a relative or friend who does
