Try Fawn Valley Inn! I’ve been to most the motels/lodges in Estes Park and this one is nice as you’ll be right next to the park entrance, be surrounded by elk, and be right next door to Nicky’s Restaurant which is rustic, casual, comfortable with a great menu and views.

Nearby Estes Peak in the park is an easy climb (well sorta tough on out-of-shape 55 year olds like myself) and is well worth the effort. If one leaves the car about 9:00 am you could take it slow, enjoy some time at the top, and get back to your car by early afternoon. Snow could be around the approaches to the peak through most of June.

Just got back from a vacation in Colorado, including RMNP. I stayed in Denver and drove the 1.75 hours up to RMNP, which is a pleasant drive through Boulder. Watch out for speed traps in Lyons, CO!! There are hotels in adjacent Estes Park and neighboring communities. I agree about Grand lake. Spectacular lake views from someplaces, smaller than Estes, not quite so touristy.

Stanley Hotel is only worth it if you can get Room 217. Paranormal activity.

I agree....YMCA of the Rockies....stayed there this summer and it was great.

You can’t go wrong with Estes Park.
I’ve not been to every scenic wonder in the USA, but only the Canadian Rockies
(Banff; Lake Jasper) exceed the Estes Park/RMNP for awesome vistas (IMHO).

Not to be paranoid, but do listen to weather reports. My parents took
me and my brother to Estes Park in the early 1970s when on the way
to visit relatives in Alberta.
Only later did I realize there was a devastating flash flood in the
Big Thompson Canyon leading into the Estes Park area.
Some of the survivors were lucky enough to realize the heavy rains
meant one thing: head for higher ground.

IIRC, some victims that were never found/recovered were only documented
when some hotel registers were found in the flooded area.

Stanley Hotel is famouus for where some of the Shining was filmed. Old and good condition. Close to park entrance and downtown Estes Park.

Fall and Winter is best for viewing wildlife in town. In summer they are up at high elevations, but the roads are open over the divide.

It must have been undergoing reconstruction at the time. Probably 1995 or so. Room was like a storage room for old furninture. Crooked floor, tilted beds, hot weather. Dinner was great though! Just one of those times when things don’t go right, I suppose.

I know that section of the river. I have caught fish in that section of river in that picture. It is actually just below Moraine Park which I see is the name on the jpg file.

We ate lunch at the Stanley sometime after that maybe 4 or 5 years ago. No reconstruction that we saw going on. We toured around a bit and looked at some rooms. I can’t imagine no a/c, we are so spoiled.
