The Cowboys is a great movie, except for the part where John Wayne gets killed. That scene ruins it for me. So earlier, John Wayne and the kids see the bad guys on the next ridge over, looking for them. But that night they build a big campfire and all sit around it with their backs to the dark forest.

So John Wayne didn’t have anyone pull sentry duty? No listening posts? No scouts? No preemptive attack or attempt to confuse the enemy? Nothing in the way of hightened alert?

If John Wayne dies in a movie, it should be because he was being heroic, not stupid, that’s all I’m saying... heh

Give the Duke a break. If you will remember he had put all the boys guns in the chuck wagon. The chuck wagon had broken down and was far behind them. What was he supposed to do? Take on the whole gang by himself? He was trying to keep the boys from getting killed by letting the rustlers take the herd without a fight. But Bruce Dern’s character was to big an a**hole to just take the herd a leave it at that. I seem to remember he sent a kid back to get the chuck wagon but the kid was caught by the rustlers.
