Intel CEO praises iPad, throws down gauntlet

Intel's chief executive Paul Otellini took a minute at the start of today's earnings conference call to praise Apple's iPad, but said Intel has every intention of ultimately winning the category.

Intel executives have made many statements about the tablet category in past conference calls. But these were typically about the category being new and only "additive" to the much larger PC market. This time Otellini made a uncharacteristically strong statement, seemingly in response to investor worries that Intel is not addressing the category aggressively enough.

"I know the big question on everyone's mind is how Intel will respond to new computing categories where Intel currently has no presence, specifically tablets...We think tablets are exciting and fully welcome their arrival. Apple has done a wonderful job reinventing the category," he said during Tuesday's conference call. "Will they impact PC sales? Sure, at the margin they probably will," he said.

Yep. To really make a dent in PC sales, tablets need to get the power of PCs. And that means more than ARM processors...

Intel has the Atom chip. By far it is a better chip than ARM.

iPads are toys/netbooks/ereaders, and not particularly well suited for any of them (a combo of laptop, kindle, and xbox 360 is about the same price, and FAR better). They have their niche, but can you imagine trying to type a letter, essay, or ANYTHING longer than an email on one? Admittedly, I generally hate the idea of Apple (but that may just be due to my hatred of tight pants, dissheveled hair, and stupid glasses), but I still feel that people like size and stability. The iPad and its ilk will never replace the PC, just like tv over the internet will bever replace my big screen.
