The Nazca lines are the only example I know of where considerable effort was put into something which, in the case of MANY of the figures, could not be seen or appreciated by those who built it. This doesn’t even drag into the topic oddities like the figure with a globe around his head.
Human behavior being a constant, I feel it is likely the indians who made them had a fairly specific reason for believing their designs would be seen beyond the general abstract ‘god(s) is(are) in the sky.’
