Most of us are scared of something - but imagine being too terrified to sleep in the dark.
This week it emerged that five million people in Britain are spooked when the lights go off.
Fears are often caused by childhood experiences or a traumatic incident. Some people are scared of dogs because they were bitten by one.
But why anyone in Britain should be afraid of spiders is a total mystery. None of the native ones are harmful.
Here are some of the phobias that make us tremble - and the fancy names doctors have given them.
New Orleans isn’t much better. The flying ones are the worst. It’s bad enough that there are cockroaches(even typing the word gives me the willies), but why do we have to have flying ones? I had a huge one fly at me one time when my son was 3 weeks old. The roach was on the wall by his crib, and I tried to gently lift the baby out of his crib before the roach could get to him, and just when I did, he flew right at me. I screamed and ran out the room with the baby, and the bug followed me and kept flying around my head. My husband was outside and heard me screaming, and took care of the critter. I’ll never forget it.
Out here in the California desert, those things are politely called “Date bugs”, because they love to hang around the date palms I guess....
You’ve heard of homophobia? Well, I had PHAGophobia (no lie). It’s the fear of swallowing and choking. (The PHAG part comes from the word esoPHAGus). I couldn’t eat anything that wasn’t liquified, and even that wasn’t a guarantee it would go down. I went to a doctor and he put me on meds, and (knock on wood) I’m better. But there are still some foods that I won’t eat, such as hot dogs and chunky meat of any kind.
Pretty much the same with me.. I take any opportunity to go up in an aircraft, choose the window seat.. and even on a 16 hour flight, I never sleep, I just enjoy the view out the window ......
BUT, I can’t stand being on the top of a building (or similar) and looking down :/ I actually hold my breath/ can’t breath >.<

I have NO problem with solid ground.. I love hiking, and would love to hike up Mt. Fuji someday before I die... But, for some reason, if it isn’t natural (minus aircraft), I lose my breath.
Is their a phobia of that?

“One of the world’s most common phobias, many psycholgists blame the Garden of Eden story in the Bible.”
That is some piss poor reasoning.
The Bible is chock full o’ stories. You could probably blame every fear in the World on it, since it covers so many subjects. I’d like to hear a scientist propose that a fear of ridden horses is caused by the four horsemen.
How about the fact that snakes are quick, sneaky little bastards who inject venom into you with fangs? Is that enough reason to fear a deadly animal who prefers to hide and strike suddenly? Or should we blame Christians?
They love to get in an anti-Christian dig whenever they can, no matter how illogical.
their - there.. sorry, almost midnight .. getting my spelling mixed up >.<

Did he swallow that?! I’m gagging just looking at that.
