Check out this Helicopter Near Crash on a Ships Helipad (close call video)

This helicopter can't get the lift it needs to take off from this barge and nearly crashes. The crew members on the ship are hoping they don't get sliced in half. Their prayers were answered because everyone was safe, although I am sure they needed to change their underwear. At least the pilot and the guy on the pad who was cringing in the fetal position as the Helicopter spun out of control needed to changer their shorts.

When I first watched this I though the guy on the helipad was going to be sliced to pieces.

The helicopter was thrown airborne before the pilot was ready due to the heaving seas. The tail rotor strikes the deck, and that is when it spins out of control. The pilot was very lucky to have put it down on the flight deck again.

I’m not sure what happened there, but I suspect ‘can’t get lift’ is wrong. It’s hard to see, but it almost looks as if the tail rotor’s not rotating towards the end - could be synching with the camera’s shutter, though.

Sweet. Have you ever had as close a call as the one in the video?

Yea, I noticed the same thing. The rear prop hitting the deck because he seemed to tilt up too much before he was high enough off the pad.

I suspect after it whacked the deck, the drive mechanism was barely engaged. Maybe a sheer pin broke and friction was causing it to move instead of a positive drive. It certainly wasn't right.

That dude on the deck was nearly pureed.

I seen a chinook almost crash on our destroyer once. The rear wheel slipped off the back of the flight deck. The pilot quickly went to full power and pulled out.

Any mishap with a helicopter can turn deadly within seconds. I think they operate on that fine line of being able to fly but not really supposed to.

I had the experience of riding a Chinook 46 rising straight up with no forward airspeed in 1968 (an unauthorized medivac flight). That bird is magnificent!

My son is aboard the Iwo Jima, he says this is pretty common stuff. Told me they were out in the Atlantic when the wind was whipping up and a chopper kept trying to make it down. Spun around all over and danced a couple of times. He said when it was all over they had to go inside and sit down for a while just to calm down.

Boy, I bet it makes a person think twice about wanting to fly one of those whirly birds.
