Inmate: Jail movies 'torture'

TITUSVILLE, Fla.- A Florida jail inmate awaiting trial is accusing the sheriff of "torture" by repeatedly showing the same movies.

James Poulin, 45, who has been in the Brevard County Detention Center for four years awaiting trial on a driving under the influence-manslaughter charge, wrote a letter to Florida Today saying Sheriff Jack Parker has been making inmates watch the same handful of movies over and over during the past year.

"Parker gathered up a bunch of old (movies) he had laying around and played them over and over for the next year," Poulin wrote. "I have seen 'Black Hawk Down,' 'Pearl Harbor,' 'Saving Private Ryan' and 'Battle Front' hundreds of times each, sometimes two or three times a day."

"Like the old Chinese water torture, the inescapable sounds of these movies over and over works on nerves and psyche," he wrote.

However, jail administrator Cmdr. Susan Jeter said no one is forced to watch the films.

"The jail provides a voluntary, video-programmed educational opportunity for the inmates," she said. "This program is available in the dayroom area ... They can go to their cells and read a book if they so choose."

How about doing what Joe Arpio does out in Maricopa County.
Show these clowns Newt Gingrich history lectures and speeches.
And for those brief musical interludes, perhaps some cool band organ tunes.

As Sheriff Joe says, if you don’t like it, don’t come back.

He has been in jail for 4 years awaiting trial on a DWI manslaughter? He may or may not be a good guy but he has a right to a speedy trial. 4 years?

Those movies listed are great movies. Well, okay Pearl Harbor which only Pearl Harbor for like the middle part. It would be torture to be forced to watch any movie with Carrot Top and Uwe Boll.

He should have a trial soon, but its Florida. Casey Anthony is scheduled to go to trial May 2011 and that could be delayed.

It is not uncommon for a wily defendant, typically one who knows he’s going to be convicted promptly once tried, to engage in delaying tactics, such as faked insanity, getting into disputes with appointed counsel (resulting in reappointment in many cases, with more delays as the new lawyer has to have some time to get up to speed), etc.

That being said, 4 years is still an awfully long time, yes.

I would guess he’s contesting some stuff pre-trial, in which case he waived his right to a speedy trial, and he either didn’t get bail or got it and couldn’t make it.

That said, I’m not crazy about the idea of staying there overnight, let alone four years and counting. Also, if the sheriff really wanted to be mean, he could have used “Deliverance” or some prison flicks with that particular plot twist, if you know what I mean and I think you do.
