A good analogy to that correction is “Kentucky windage” in shooting. You know your last shot missed a bit to the left, so you adjust your next shot a bit to the right. The issue is that the gap between elections is two years and the gap between comparable elections may be four years, by which time things will have changed.

Affirmative action [and other long-debated issues] is a calcified trench-warfare issue that divides people. Banning muslim immigrants is a unifying exciting issue that leaves other candidates [except perhaps Cruz] flat-footed.
