Wife totalled car; Considering many models; Recommendations?
Me

Posted on 12/31/2010 12:04:58 PM PST by RangerM

Found out yesterday that wife totalled car. Long story short, looks like I'm buying a car soon. She'll want another SUV, but I'm thinking CUV. Looking at....

Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute Hyundai Tuscon Kia Sportage Mitsubishi Outlander Honda CR-V (a bit pricey) Mazda5 (not a CUV, but I'm including it as a wildcard)

I've read a lot of info online, but am hoping to hear from anyone with personal experience and thoughts. I'm going shopping with my wife, when I get back in town.

(NOTE: I refuse to consider RAV4 because my last Toyota was a disappointment, or anything GM/Chrysler)

83 Eldorado Biarritz or 66 Pontiac Catalina convertible. Man’s most beautiful creations, next to the Tiger Tank and the Thompson Sub-gun.

I only buy Ford products, well built, less government input.

Toyota’s been the best/most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned.

Crossover (essentially a small, car-based SUV)

Toyota Camery or any Toyota. They are the best cars and last forever. Trucks and SUVs are good in the Toyota area as well.

Leased my wife a Ford Edge. Got all the bells and whistles for a fraction of the cost of a lot of compas. They make a crossover but she didn’t like it. This thig is really nice, big, not too big. Terrible on gas, great for around town. Get the 6 cyl. Real nice car. My old man always said buy land lease cars. I lease them for the wife and buy them for me, because I keep the ones I like a good long time.

I’d look for one in her early thirties, never married, no kids, decent career, that can drive better than your prevoius model.

My car was hit just before Christmas and I have a Ford Escape as a rental. Don’t like it much, front seat area is cramped. It gets ok mileage but I like my RAV4 much better.

I used to think that, before we bought my wife’s Highlander.

The engine/tranny were fine, but so many little things broke (trim, switchgear, etc) that I don’t care to purchase another.

Had a used ‘79 Eldo Brrtz.

Put close to 200K miles on it, but not without significant repairs.

Its long front end used to quickly wear out the shocks, and would heave like an ocean liner when driving down the highway.

Honda CRV. Hondas really hold their value. But test drive the new Equinox. Was this a snow accident? Does she need 4WD?

Whatever you get, don’t let her drive it!!!!

On the bright side, since she wrecked it, that gives you leverage in getting the car of your choice! :p

If you are buying used, look at the Saturn VUE. Out of production but the safety design is spectacular.

My daughter got hit on the drivers side post, flipped 3X and survived. The responding LEO nominated her for an award because he thought she’s be dead when he arrived.

Seat-belt plug, too.
