What would have happened, if Gabby's assistants had guns and knew how to use them?

Posted on 01/15/2011 7:53:21 AM PST by syriacus

Would there have been fewer victims?

Was there an opportunity to stop the shooter?

yes and yes, and the Indian shaman could have been chanting to mother earth and father sky for Loughner instead of 6 innocents

What if Wonder Woman was there and deflected the bullets with her bracelets?

Possibly not a clean opportunity to stop the initial shooting of Giffords, but definitely could have significantly shortened the subsequent rampage.

According to a friend who passes that Safeway twice every day, I believe she said that she said it’s been reported on their local news that a retired LtCol inside the store had a concealed handgun. She said he was in the Safeway when the shots rang out. He ran to the front of the store, but when he appeared outside with his weapon drawn, he was stopped by two men who were unsure of his motives. By then, the 15 seconds of shooting was over, and Loughner was on the ground being subdued.

I’ve not heard any mention of the LtCol nationally.

IMHO, he used true gun control. If its not safe to shoot, you shouldn’t. Especially in a crowd of hysterical people. He did the right thing. If I recall, he was also in his 70’s. With this current administration, he would be in jail now for a trigger pull.

When a shooting starts, if lots of people pull guns there is immense danger of the wrong people getting shot.

If people are being shot and you see three people with guns, how the hell are you supposed to know which are the bad guys? Although the bald guy with the crazy glare is a good place to start.

Not a criticism of the idea of concealed carry, just a recognition that this is a horrible situation with no easy answers.

Of concern to any CCW holder is the presence of other CCw holders and LEO’s. Should someone start shooting in say a crowded shopping mall, you draw your gun and shoot him. The guy goes down and now you are left standing holding a gun. OTher CCW holders and LEO’s hearing shot’s fired and trying to make their way through panicing pedestrians see you shoot a guy. What are you going to do to avoid being shot? How do you know that guy approaching you with gun drawn isn’t another shooter? How do you know the guy you just shot wasn’t himself a CCW/offduty LEO?

Reports suggest the shooting was pretty quick. It’s hard to react quickly to an unexpected incident.

Remember when the guy in Seattle went into the donut shop and managed to shoot 4 police officers, and only one managed to get a shot off?

And with the crowd around, it might have been difficult to get a clean shot off.

I don’t think this incident is a good one for suggesting guns would have helped. Of course, that’s because a group of onlookers took positive action and disarmed the guy. If he had had a second gun instead, that would have ended badly, and having a gun would have been a help.

Gabby's aides would have known which guy was harming people.

Would her aides have been in a position to quickly react, and quickly bring down the shooter?

Maybe they would not have been in the right place to end the rampage. (Which is what I am wondering)

How would the media have reacted to a hero who shot, and perhaps killed, Loughren?

That's what I am wondering about.

Might a gun have helped stop Loughner sooner?

Or not....

That's why I am wondering if her aides (not nearby shoppers) would have been in a good location to assess the situation and shoot Loughner.

I understand that. And in 15 seconds, there’s little which can be done to counter a deranged gunman.

I’m always chatting it up with people around me when I’m standing in a line. Anti-social people raise my surveillance antennas.

JLLoughner had better start wishing for his trial to be sent to a state far away. Tucson’s judges were all recused; Tucson citizens all know someone connected to last Saturday; Phoenix will be the same way; and San Diego is still too close, imo.

I have wondered that if she had been threatened prior why there was no security in the first place???

That's why I am asking about this particular situation.

Not all situations are the same. And I don't have "facts" about this one.

If you have a chance, do you draw your gun and shoot the guy who shot your boss, before he shoots a dozen other people?

Did Gabby's aides have a chance, or was everyone doomed from the start?

More general knowledge about weapons may well have been helpful. Most pistols don't work so well when someone has a grip on the slide and that easily could have been accomplished in a crowd.

Notice how Sarah Palin confronts a stalker, and how Todd deals with him

(and yes, “Hawk” is a stalker who used a false name and pretense to approach the Palins)

What you said.

We have to remember that one of the first heroes on the scene last week WAS ARMED. But he wisely did not pull his weapon.

He saw victims everywhere. He saw two men wrestling on the ground over a gun. He assessed the situation - and assessed WRONGLY. If he had shot first... he would have shot the wrong guy.
