Blame BARELY beat Zenyatta. If Jerry Smith hadn’t waited so long, she would have gone 21 for 21. Overall, she is the superior horse.

Blame BARELY beat Zenyatta.

True enough but Blame still won. I think this is a case where the voters considered the entire career, rather than just the accomplishments for the year.

“Blame BARELY beat Zenyatta.”

So. Zenyatta “barely” won most of her races against tiny fields. And except for Gio Ponti (a grass horse) she had never beaten anybody worth noting. Not to mention her speed figures were not that great.
Now I like Zenyatta, and her record speaks for itself, but I don’t think she is the second coming of Regret.

Blame ran against better competition all season, then beat Zenyatta. Blame is a horse while Zenyatta is a mare.

If I were to apply your logic to the BCS championship, Oregon barely lost to Auburn, missing several scoring opportunities, and then losing the game on a fluke play late. Oregon looked like the better team and regardless of losing, they should have been named the champion.

That being said, I really don't care who was named HOY. Blame will have every opportunity to make (his connections) huge money as a sire.
