I well remember dialing into BBs prior to the internet, but few had more then a handfull of lines.
As for ham radio, they could shut that down, just as they did in WW2, but if it comes to that, we will be in full revolution by then.

Throw a wire over a tree and tune to 40m band. You will have contact with folks in many states just like that.

How is (was) that possible? Do you mean triangulation and confiscation?
