Petra is back as Classic Petra (Vanity)
Classic Petra ^ | February 24, 2011 | DJMacWoW

The Christian rock band, Petra, has come together again with the original members: Bob Hartman, Greg X Volz, John Lawry, Louie Weaver and Mark Kelly. They have a new CD called Back to the Rock. I have it and it IS classic Petra. There are two new songs, Back to the Rock and Too Big to Fail. The others are redone and STILL GREAT.

They will be on tour but unfortunately, so far it's only a few places in the US.

Thursday June 30 Cornerstone, Chicago, Ill
Sunday July 31 Kingdom Bound, Darien Center, New York
Thursday August 4th Soulfest, Billford, New Hampshire

I just got the CD. Wait until you hear Back to the Rock! Love it! It's exactly about what you'd think. Building on THE Rock or on shifting sand.

"And he built his house on the rock of Jesus and it still stands today"

Still singing Scripture. :-D

Hummmm. A friend from Church gave me a Petra CD and I never got around to listening to it. From the sounds of this thread maybe I ought to check it out.

It is rock music. No organs. But the lyrics are all based on Scripture.

What CD were you given?

And there's a link to one of their songs in Post 1.

Sure, scripturally sound.

In the words of Hank Hill,
"You're not making Christianity better, you're just making Rock and Roll worse!"

I have no idea which CD of theirs it was, it’s sitting in a box of cds in the basement somewhere and I haven’t looked at it in years, probably since the day he gave it to me.

They said the same thing to Luther when they stopped chanting.

Everything in the earth and on it was created by God. Lucifer distorts all that God created. God created music. ALL music.

I won't change your mind and you will not change mine.

Have a nice day.

I prefer early Petra. Before Greg Volz left. He’s back. :-)

I’ve heard your argument my entire life. It is wrong logically, but more importantly wrong Biblically. Now if you do not want to go there I do not blame you.

To read sexualization into everything tells more about you than the object you are attacking. Listen to Third Day, if you are drifting to sexual thoughts there is something seriously wrong with you. Even that said, I can support my stance on Love songs that have no “Christian” theme. It is amazing how God used marriage to illustrate his love for us. Have you read the Song of Solomon? I suggest you don’t if you are sensitive.

There was a generation that once screamed at the top of their lungs: How dare you put an organ in the church!

In the late 19th century...the Southern Baptist convention had a knock down drag out about the same songs we cherish today. They thought of them as radical.

These are statements of fact. Do with them what you will.

“There was a generation that once screamed at the top of their lungs...”

My 16-year old pretty much only listens to Christen rock. Some of it I’ll listen to. But not the “screamo” stuff. I always kid him as the tone sounds like the cross between Jim Morrison’s yells and a goat getting butchered. I can’t understand the words - but I’ll fake it and scream in my best death rattle “Jesus loves me this I know...” (And then tell him “Ya know, the music is supposed to at least TRY to fit the lyrics.”

God Gave Rock and Roll to You!

Part of the soundtrack of my youth... I'm not even a Christian anymore, but I'm going to try to catch them on tour.

It Is Finished

In the heat of early morning on a hill
They call The Skull
The roaring of the angry mob
Had settled to a lull

All eyes were cast upon the man
Whose hands and feet were bound
They saw Him cry in anguish
When they heard the hammer pound

They saw the bloody woven thorns with
Which His head was crowned
They watched the bloody cross of wood
Be dropped into the ground

The soldiers gambled for His clothes
They watched them win and lose
They saw the sign above His head
That said "King of the Jews

It is finished
And the sky grew black as the night
It is finished
And the people scattered in fright

The work had been done
Redemption had been won
The war was over without a fight
It is finished

They searched His face for anger
For vengeance in his stare
Instead of eyes that burned with hate
A look of love was there

He prayed for their forgiveness
And bowed His battered head
And no one knew the meaning
Of the final words He said

It is finished
And the sky grew black as the night
It is finished
And the people scattered in fright

The work had been done
Redemption had been won
The war was over without a fight
It is finished

The provision has been made
The foundation has been laid
He paid the ransom due
And tore the temple veil in two
And opened up the way
For me and you

It is finished

It is finished
And the sky grew black as the night
It is finished
And the people scattered in fright

The work had been done
Redemption had been won
The war was over without a fight
It is finished

Don't forget about the sexually charged lyrics of "The Coloring Song"

Red is the color of the blood that flowed
Down the face of Someone Who loved us so
He's the perfect man, He's the Lord's own son,
He's the Lamb of God, He's the only one
That can give us life, that can make us grow,
That can make the love between us flow.

Blue is the color of a heart so cold
It will not bend when the story's told
Of the love of God for a sinful race
Of the blood that flowed down Jesus face
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can keep our hearts from growing cold.

Gold is the color of the morning sun
That shines so freely an every one
It's the sun above that keeps us warm
It's the Son of love that calms the storm
That can give us life that can make us grow,
That can turn our mornings into gold.

Brown is the color of the autumn leaves
When the winter comes to the barren trees
There is birth, there is death, there is a plan
And there's just one God, and there's just one man
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make our sins as white as snow

That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can turn our mornings into gold.
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can keep our hearts from growing cold.
That can give us life, that can make us grow
That can make the love between us flow.

Get Steve Taylor back in the studio and on the road and I may have to reconvert. :)

Ah yes! AND:

Hollow Eyes

Matthew 25:35-46

Words & Music by Bob Hartman

Another day in Nigeria the children beg for bread
The crops failed, the well ran dry
When they lost the watershed
A baby dies, its mother cries the children gather 'round
They're wondering what the day will bring
Will they be the next one found
Do you dare to look into their hollow eyes
In the crowded sheds the children lay their heads
To escape the Haitian heat
The hunger pains drive them to the street
Wondering if today they'll eat
Some found food in the refuse heap
Others find disease
Some find it harder just to live
When they can die with ease
Do you dare to look into their hollow eyes
The least of these is hungry
The least of these is sick
The least of these needs clothing
The least of these needs drink
The least of these knows sorrow
The least of these knows grief
The least of these suffers pain
And Jesus is his name
