Petra is back as Classic Petra (Vanity)
Classic Petra ^ | February 24, 2011 | DJMacWoW

Posted on 02/24/2011 11:29:08 AM PST by DJ MacWoW

The Christian rock band, Petra, has come together again with the original members: Bob Hartman, Greg X Volz, John Lawry, Louie Weaver and Mark Kelly. They have a new CD called Back to the Rock. I have it and it IS classic Petra. There are two new songs, Back to the Rock and Too Big to Fail. The others are redone and STILL GREAT.

They will be on tour but unfortunately, so far it's only a few places in the US.

Thursday June 30 Cornerstone, Chicago, Ill
Sunday July 31 Kingdom Bound, Darien Center, New York
Thursday August 4th Soulfest, Billford, New Hampshire

'Miss the mark'-you mean SINNED?

Pathetic.

Pathetic.

Unfortunately yes, your post was.

Would like to pick apart this line?

I can't condone or justify it

Or this one?

But I've done nothing that His blood can't wash away

Maybe you could critique the lyrics in Post 34. I'm sure you could SOMETHING that you don't like.

I think you need to re-read my posts, you don’t seem to get it.

I am saying these people are kidding themselves that this music is christian. It is rock music. Rock music is not christian music. It doesn’t matter what words you slap over screaming guitars and shouting singers that dress and act like any other rock musician. The message is overwhelmed by the rock music.

Rock music is by nature not Godly music. The dancing beat of heavy drums and hard heavy bass, and arpeggio guitar solos and screaming and yelling is not godly music. I don’t care what words you put there, it is not godly music. If you would feel weird about playing it from CD, or having the artists perform it live, for one of your church services, then there’s a problem with that music.

I am saying don’t kid yourselves about the nature of rock music. It isn’t christian music. No matter what kind of veneer you try to put over it, it’s still rock music, and not christian music. I am not saying you should never listen to it, I am saying be honest with yourself, do not kid yourself as to what it is you are listening to.

I think where people get confused is that they confuse personal preferences with the nature of a music style and whether that music is christian or not.

I am all for personal preference. That said, I also believe that not all music styles are christian, regardless if they are self-labeled as such.

Just because some artists call themselves christian artists, that doesn’t automatically make that statement correct.

Does the music glorify God? Can you really look at all music marketed as ‘christian’ and say all of it glorifies God alone? Are the musicians dressed and acting in ways that glorify God, that they appear upright, or do they act and look just like the rest of the worldly musicians and their videos? If you can’t tell the difference there’s a problem.

Do the artists themselves look and act? Can you tell they are godly people by what they are doing, arethey dressed respectfully and modestly, or do they look and act like any other rock musician? If you can’t tell the difference, there’s a problem. Would you feel comfortable with them dressing the way they do in their video or on the CD cover, and doing their stage act in your church providing music for your congregation on Sunday? If you wouldn’t, then there’s a problem.

What about the music itself? You want ‘christian’ thrash playing in your church? You want ‘christian’ punk playing on Sunday in your church service? You want ‘christian’ speed metal or heavy metal playing Sunday morning at your service? Why not? If the message is good, the music doesn’t matter, right. Well, the music does matter. There is not ‘christian punk’ - it’s just punk. Just like there’s no ‘christian porn’.

You look at all these artists claiming to be christian, and line them up against all the other rock bands, and if you can’t tell the difference between the self-identified ‘christians’ and the worldy ones - they look the same, they sound the same, they’re doing the same kinds of things on stage and in their videos - then that is a very, very serious problem.

You're demonstrating the psychological phenomenon called projection.

Rock music is by nature not Godly music. The dancing beat of heavy drums and hard heavy bass, and arpeggio guitar solos and screaming and yelling is not godly music.

You're engaging in a priori argument. You're merely asserting. You're spiritualizing your own cultural and musical tastes. Looking at your choice of adjectives (dancing, hard, heavy, screaming), it looks likely that you've been seriously sexualizing things, and, no, "arpeggio" is not a synonym for "fellatio" even though both have a Latin origin, the same ending, the same number of syllables, and doubled letters.

Are you sure you're not Bob Garlock from B.J. University?

screaming guitars and shouting singers

Which of the songs that I've posted have either?

I'd bet you listened to none of them.

And I'm truly sorry that you can see through a keyhole with both eyes.

To an outsider to come into a church and here only hymns and other very old fashioned type music, they won't feel comfortable.

The truly funny thing is that a lot of folks who think their old-timey music is "spiritual" don't seem to realize that it was a musical style that was contemporary back in the 1930s or earlier.

Three words.
Three chords.
Three versus.

And one misspelling. By the way, the vast majority of songs follow the I, IV, V, I chord progression.

Witch Hunt

Based on 1 Timothy 4:7, Titus 3:9
Words and music by Bob Hartman

Everybody look there's a new bandwagon in town
Hop on board and let the wind carry you around
Seems like there's not enough to keep us busy till the Lord comes back
Don Quixote's gotta have another windmill to attack

(Chorus)
Another witch hunt looking for evil wherever we can find it
Off on a tangent, hope the Lord won't mind it
Another witch hunt, takin' a break from all our gospel labor
On a crusade but we forgot our saber

There's a new way to spend all our energies
We're up in arms instead of down on our knees
Walkin' over dollars trying to find another dime
Never mind the souls 'cause we really haven't got the time

So send out the dogs and tally ho
Before we sleep tonight we've got miles to go
No one is safe, no stone's left unturned
And we won't stop until somebody gets burned
Bro Bro Bro Bro Bro Bro Brothers

Post their videos of these songs and let people hear and see them, words alone simply don’t cut it.

I love that old-timey stuff too. Absolutely love it. I realize it is out of fashion for many people though. And you betcha, I look for the words and the Biblical content of it all.

Nope, not projecting, not assuming anything.

Music can be tested as to whether it is godly or not, just like anything else, using discernment. Some music is godly, and some isn’t. ‘Christian rock’ is just rock with a christian veneer wrapped around it. It’s still rock music. Which by its nature is not godly music.

Get Steve Taylor back in the studio and on the road..

I could handle that...

Hero - Steve Taylor

When the house fell asleep there was always a light
and it fell from the page to the eyes of an American boy
in a storybook land I could dream what I read
when it went to my head I'd see
I wanna be a hero, I wanna be a hero

But the practical side said the question was still
when you grow up what will you be?
I wanna be a hero

Hero
it's a nice-boy notion that the real world's gonna destroy
you know
it's a Marvel comic book Saturday matinee fairytale, boy

Growing older you'll find that illusions are brought
and the idol you thought you'd be was just another zero
I wanna be a hero

Heroes died when the squealers bought 'em off
died when the dealers got 'em off
welcome to the "in it for the money as an idol" show
when they ain't as big as life
when they ditch their second wife
where's the boy to go?
gotta be a hero

Hero
it's a nice-boy notion that the real world's gonna destroy
you know
it's a Marvel comic book Saturday matinee fairytale, boy

When the house fell asleep
from a book I was led to a Light that I never knew
I wanna be your hero
and He spoke to my heart from the moment I prayed
here's a pattern I made for you
I wanna be your hero, I wanna be your hero

I don’t care about the words. So what about the words. It’s the rock music and the band’s actions and dress and behavior that make this ungodly music.

You can’t just say “I have pretty words” but put them to thrash or metal or had rock music, and say it’s still god-blessed music, and expect people to believe you.
