They’re not law enforcement, they’re cashiers!! So is every adult who goes in with their children going to be asked for proof of identity proving that they are in fact their children when they buy alcohol? Ridiculous...won’t go there anymore!!!

I am on the store's side. Here's why: In Ohio, the state runs stings on liquor and cigarette retailers. The agents pose as people like you and if the store had let the "daughter" through, the cashier would be facing jail time. It's entrapment, but our state supreme court allows it.

Yes and that is wrong.

What if the child with you wasn't your daughter? Maybe it was the neighbor's kid that you picked up after school as a favor to your neighbor. Maybe it was the kid you babysit for. Maybe it was your niece or nephew. What does it matter whether that child was your progeny if you can legally purchase the product?

Yes, many states do run stings. The law says that anyone who appears to be under 40 yo must have valid ID to purchase cigarettes and liquor, and that the store must check, and that civil and criminal penalties attach to failure to verify valid ID.

Tell me who routinely carries around ID or any other information to prove that a child is indeed their child? This cashier wanted proof that she was my daughter. My daughter is 12; I don’t believe most 12 year olds have a state mandated ID, if they do, that’s news to me. I had already shown the cashier my ID, in fact I had it ready to show to her, which was all that was required of me. For a cashier to tell me I need to prove that my child is my child, is a bit much...what’s next? DNA proof?
