You can also add a nitrogen fertlizer to your pile.

I figured the alfalfa rabbit feed would do the trick. It's what I used in lieu of grass clippings in late winter, and that seemed to work out well.

About 3 or 4 cups of a 10-10-10 general garden fert should be enough or an inexpensive high nitrogen lawn fertilizer without herbicide (NO WEED AND FEED FERTILIZERS). Also ammonium nitrate or ammonium sulfate can be used but just 1 cup of these high nitrogen products.

My seedlings are just starting to sprout in my room. They don’t have the kind of light that’s recommended, so they’ll no doubt be kind of leggy, but I know a few tricks for nurturing leggy plants. Besides, this is the only way I have to start seeds indoors without the cat “helping”.

My new work schedule is crazy so far, but it should get easier in a couple more weeks.

Are there any wildlife specialists on this thread? I think I found where the neighborhood owl has been nesting, right in my backyard! But there are signs that he’s not doing so well, and I’d really like to talk to someone who knows owls. I tried the local wildlife rescue groups, they told me to call wildlife control, who told me to call the police, who told me to call the DNR, who told me to call the local wildlife rescue groups. I’m not looking to catch it or get rid of it, I just want to make sure he’s ok, so he can serenade me through my window again.

I used to get manure and hay mix from a horse stable for $10.00 per pickup load, but quit after someone warned me about the herbicides used on hay crops. I just pick up some at the farm, since none is used there. You could also see if there are any chicken or turkey farmers in your area. We used to use sheep manure on the farm.

Maybe your cat has been eating the owls share of mice? I would think he/she would move on to a better feeding area if that was the case.

I’m trying to avoid fertilizer if at all possible, mostly because I’m right uphill from a lake that’s a municipal water supply. I don’t suppose just a cup of a high-N stuff would cause a problem. But maybe I’ll try the manure-injection first, and see how that goes.

This is my first Spring at this location, and the experimenting is half the fun. :-)

Try the Vetenary School at your State University.

It would take 1000 cats to make a dent in the mouse population here!

My cat’s more the catch-and-release type anyway :p

I understand!

I started later than I wanted to, the Feb 1 snowstorm took out my greenhouse plastic, so there was a big hole in the W wall. We decided to use a hard siding type of wall, finally got that ordered and installed. But we also procrastinate, so... Late! LOL!

It sounds like you’re further south. I’m in northern MO, we just had a week of lows in the 20s. Blech. I’m ready for the nice weather.

Hate those critters. They do a lot of damage to my tomatoes! I think I will see if Diatomacous Earth will do them in this year

It looks like you live in Wisconsin so let’s ask the experts from the Tundra Outback about seed staring there...

Please be very very careful in who you call. In fact, I’d suggest doing nothing. We went through the same thing one time with a rabbit. The “rescue” person slipped that she was going to kill it. Needless to say, I wasn’t going to let that happen. She got snippy and informed me that once she had possession of it there was nothing I could do. Oh, I think NOT, witch! I got the rabbit back. Never, never again will I call in anyone. I’ll do what I can and let Mother Nature take care of her own.

I don't know who coined the phrase(lie) " Hi I'm from the government and I'm here to help you" but here is a classic example of the irony of that statement... Permits you can't garden without them in Oakland Ca.

Unless I tell them to come get it, they’d be trespassing. I just want someone to talk to who knows owls.

I’m keeping a journal this year, too. In the past, I could spread out as far as I wanted so it didn’t matter. Now that I have limited space, I need to make the best of it. I, too, started late and was rushed so already goofed up the spacing. Trial run this year but next year it’s down to business.

Four of the seven berries from TSC never leafed out so lesson learned. I’ve heard others had the same bad luck. As long as the remaing three thrive it’ll be ok as they can be progagated for next year.

Yep. You can direct seed it all. If it looks too crowded as it grows, just yank it out or transplant chunks of it elsewhere. :)
