Could you translate that into English?

I would recommend NOT installing system cleanup programs, just an anti-malware program and a firewall.

What version of Windows are you using? XP would probably be best for that system. How much RAM? Do you ever do a complete shut down?

Also note that MANY patches for Windows, Flash, Firefox add features or address problems, they almost never speed things up.

I just started using Chrome and it is very fast. Supposedly IE9 is vastly improved and considered by some to be superior to either FF or Chrome. IE9 is only available to Vista, Win7 systems. I have XP so I don’t have any personal experience with it.

I run FF 4.0 on a 2003 Dell Inspiron with XP.
It’s great!

One of these days I’m gonna have to upgrade to something with more RAM though.

I think you can get a decent rig with an i3 and 4meg RAM for 500 bucks. Probably not for long when inflation sets in.

How do you feel about running registry cleanup programs such as CC Cleaner?

I use Malware Bytes and Nod32.

You should consider me an expert. Get rid of IObit, or at least you shouldnt have paid for it. Ccleaner is a freeware program that does this job, should be used about twice a year or when there is a new software installation problem.

Firefox 4 is great but uses more memory than FF 3.6 for alot of open tabs.
No problem, especially since shutdown and restart...lowers the memory useage, occurs quickly in about 60 seconds. However, FF has problems on an XP machine at least, when memory usage is in the 600-700mb range, necessitating restart before it starts acting up. An addon called ‘memory restart’ is an easy but inaccurate way of monitoring the memory useage of the browser from within the browser.

If you use your computer for any banking or shopping online with a credit card, etc. You need an ‘Internet Security Suite’....Kaspersky is highly recommended and money well spent. An Internet Security Suite monitors incoming and outgoing internet traffic to keep you from getting that virus, trojan to begin with. Kaspersky Internet Security also contains a regular anti-virus scanner. So the two strategies contained in one program keep you virus-free most of the time. An Anti-virus scanner program alone tends to leave you with a false sense of security and unknown infectins capture your credit card/logon details before you know that the virus is on your machine.

My laptop is no great shakes it's a DELL Latitude D600 bought for $350 from Pine Computers here in South Burlington.

There's your first mistake. That guy is so crooked he makes used car salesman look like paragons of virtue.

When shutting down the PC, I use C Cleaner to clean the registry and MRU Blaster to clean the cookies that try to hang on. Once a week I’ll use Gary Utilities and Malwearbytes. I have AVG Free running as my virus protection, it scans the whole computer every night. My email opens in the blink of an eye and FireFox comes up in maybe two or three seconds.

I have deleted all the automatic opening websites that come on if the pc is running from Internet Explorer. Adblock Plus and NoScript are my two downloads for FF. My firewalls are locked down tight. I don’t use ActiveX, Chrome or any of the fancy software except on websites that I fully trust. That seems to be where most of today’s problem originate.

I am not familiar with CC Cleaner. My overall experience is that they can do more harm than good. I also wind up doing a clean install every year or so.

I bet if you used CCleaner or Glary Utilities, etc you wouldn't need to do that every year... :)

yes they are minimal. I don’t even allow AVG free version to run only when i’m on & that’s about it.
