Also, don’t forget that this really won’t be an either/or situation, at least not for very long. The first time there is a budget crunch, they’ll pass a new gas tax and everyone will be paying BOTH.
“I wish the FReeper posting program had a spell-checker built into it’s comments section.”
It does, it’s that little button marked “Spell” next to the “Preview” button.
Maybe the idiots proposing this don’t unserstand just how easy it is to disconnect a speed sensor on a lot of vehicles, which also runs the odometer. Real easy for it to “become loose.”
The idea is that rural folks might be buying very high miles-per-gallon cars, thereby “cheating” the government by using more road for less money than their less efficient counterparts.
Get it?
See, they want to concentrate us all in government controlled housing in government-controlled cities, where consumption of water, power, and other necessities of life can be monitored and regulated, even on a per-household basis.
That’s what they REALLY want.
Here’s how they will control you:
Raise and lower the tax charged depending on where you are and when you are there. Were not taking away your freedom to travel. It’s just that if you drive down the freeway at 8:00 we’ll bankrupt you. So really, it’s in your best interest to act like we tell you.
None of this applies to unlicensed non-citizens driving 1980 Chevys. They can continue doing what they’ve always done.
In the hands of a bureaucrat? No thanks.
I was thinking of this the other day. Especially with the prevalence of GPS navigation system that can tell you how fast you are going independent of your cars instruments.
.....none of the above.
It does, its that little button marked Spell next to the Preview button.
That only applies when you post a reply. fella was referring to the original comment section when you post a new thread.
One of the first threads I posted I had a horrible spelling error. Instead of public, I typed pubic. I even copied and pasted that into a word document, but since it is a word, that didn't help. That got a lot of silly replies.
If they use the miles driven tax based on hybrid and electric cars, let those drivers pay a little extra.
I think the larger amount of gas tax is federal not state. States cannot do anything about federal taxes...So it might be possible to get more state tax by taxing the amount of miles drive....just my opinion, nothing to back it up on...
“That only applies when you post a reply. fella was referring to the original comment section when you post a new thread.”
Ah, gotcha. I just saw the word “comments” and thought he meant replies. Thanks for the correction.
Then they aren’t really privately owned, they’d just be another NGO. The government should need a search warrant to get that info...
I suspect there’s a germ of a good idea lurking in this concept, nevertheless........
Under present $/gal. taxation those buying more fuel pay more, regardless of the miles they drive, so inefficiency is penalized and the “system” profits because it receives more tax revenue than the vehicle impact costs it in repairs/maintenance. IOW, “fuel hog” drivers are subsidizing more efficient vehicles.
Now if owners are forced to face those costs they will, ISFAP, reduce them, or find alternative fuels, thereby reducing the road tax income. (How many home-made biodiesel users are reporting their untaxed mileage ? ) How long before others find similar escapes ? IOW, its going to be the “Whiskey Rebellion” all over again ! What better way to polarize the American public’s animus to an overweaning federal government ? >PS
